If those picks turned ultimately out to be surprises - the Cavaliers taking Nevada-Las Vegas forward Anthony Bennett with the first pick and the Bobcats choosing Indiana center Cody Zeller with the fourth - the No. 5 pick of the Phoenix Suns...

Dec. 21 , 2006: Top-ranked Maryland doubles the score on Loyola, defeating the Greyhounds, 110-55, in women's basketball at a sold-out Reitz Arena. It's the 13th victory for the undefeated Terps, who shoot 61 percent from the field and get 21 points from sophomore forward Marissa Coleman. Dec. 21, 2003: In a 35-0 shutout of Cleveland, the Ravens' Jamal Lewis rushes for 205 yards and two touchdowns as visiting Baltimore (9-6) inches toward a playoff berth. Lewis, who gained 295 yards against the Browns earlier in the season, becomes the first NFL player to rush for at least 200 yards against a team twice in one season since O.J. Simpson in 1973.

Los Angeles -- The Staples Center was packed on a recent Saturday night, all the way up to the skyboxes. LeBron James was in town, the Hollywood types were in their courtside seats and the home team was one of the hottest in the NBA, leading the Pacific Division and already talking about the playoffs. But their uniforms sure looked funny. They read "Clippers" across the front. In a town where you're only as good as your last performance, the Los Angeles Clippers have become the league's biggest turnaround story this season.

The Phoenix Suns have spent the past six months confounding the experts. Many thought coach Mike D'Antoni's European-style offense wouldn't work over the course of an 82-game schedule. Others believed that Amare Stoudemire was more highlight reel than for real. And even a few predicted that Steve Nash wouldn't be as effective playing without Dirk Nowitzki. As the NBA playoffs begin today, most of the skeptics have scattered. After racing through the regular season with the league's best record (62-20)

At some point in the latter half of the first round of tomorrow night's NBA draft, Juan Dixon expects to hear his name called. After that, he plans to silence the next group of skeptics. Dixon has heard it all before, dating to his arrival at the University of Maryland five years ago. He was a rail-thin shooting guard out of Calvert Hall, a talented Baltimore kid with a painful past who earned a basketball scholarship while coping with the AIDS-related deaths of both parents. But to many observers, the big, bad Atlantic Coast Conference would swallow up the undersized Dixon.

PHOENIX -- For the Washington Bullets, the odds facing them proved too much to overcome. Chris Webber, the team's best player this season, was on the bench after fouling out. And Calbert Cheaney wasn't even on the bench, having left with an injury in the first quarter. Not exactly the way the Bullets wanted to face a 16-game losing streak to the Phoenix Suns that has spanned over eight years. And those odds were simply too much to overcome as the Suns pulled out a 114-107 win, ending Washington's' four-game winning streak.

Just more than three years ago, the Phoenix Suns and the Chicago Bulls played an exciting NBA Finals, eventually won by the Bulls in six games. At the time, it appeared a rivalry, maybe countering that of the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s, was born. But there were no similarities to that Finals when the teams met on Wednesday. The Bulls won, remaining the only unbeaten team in the NBA (11-0). The Suns dropped to 0-10, the only winless team in the NBA.That is why Cotton Fitzsimmons quit as coach last week, and promoted Danny Ainge.

LANDOVER -- Juwan Howard was sitting in front of his locker, with one of those "what can I say?" looks on his face. For the second time this season, the Washington Bullets looked to end a long losing streak to the Phoenix Suns. And for the second time, they failed."It's the same thing that happened when we lost out there in Phoenix," Howard said. "I think we should have won both. A game like this is tough to lose."This loss, a 123-115 overtime defeat before a sellout crowd of 18,756 at the USAir Arena, extended Washington's losing streak against Phoenix to 16 games.

It's still months before the end of the season, when the league will hand out its annual awards. But as the NBA takes a brief break this weekend for the All-Star Game in Phoenix, here's a look at the half-season top performers:* Most Valuable Player -- Hakeem Olajuwon, Houston Rockets. Some fans may take this as Shaq-bashing, which is wrong. The Orlando Magic's Shaquille O'Neal has improved his game tremendously and leads the league in scoring (30.0), but my MVP is the guy I'd like to have take the big shot at the end of the game.
