The Church of SS. Philip and James will sponsor a non-political vigil "From Discord to Harmony, Toward Healingthe Wounds of War" beginning tomorrow at 5 p.m.The vigil, intended to deal with the emotions brought on by the Persian Gulf War, ends Saturday at 7:30 a.m.The public is invited to participate in readings, meditations and prayer. Monsignor Martin Raymond Strempeck, a former Johns Hopkins Hospital chaplain and former pastor of Hydes and Charles Village congregations, died of complications from congestive heart failure Tuesday at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. He was 82 and lived in Bel Air. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of Martin Maximillian Strempeck, a baker at Stone's Bakery on East Lombard Street. His mother was the former Rose Sobcszak, a homemaker. He attended St. Brigid's School and a high school seminary, St. Charles College in Catonsville.

A memorial service for Carl Jackson Barnwell Jr., who played piano at Grand Central, the Hippo and other Mount Vernon area bars and a former music minister at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at SS. JEANNE BAKER PYLE, R.N., retired, age 81, died September 29, 2006 at Leisure Chateau Nursing Home in Lakewood, NJ. Born in Baltimore, MD, graduated from Seton High School, Mercy Hospital, married at St. Philip and James in 1946. Lived in Trenton, NJ, Blessed Sacrament Parish, 1960 to 1966 and Columbus, OH 1965 to 2000 St. Michaels Parish, Worthington. Nursing career spanned 1945 to 1989. Husband James H. Pyle, Jr., J.D., Lt. USN retired, also of Baltimore, died 2001 in Columbus, OH. Son Paul Pyle died in 1983 in Columbus, OH. Surviving are sons James and Philip and their spouses Sheila and Elenita and three grandchildren, Catherine, Nicholas and James.

They were baptized in SS. Philip and James Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore, received Communion and married there. Some, even though they live elsewhere, continued as parishioners.Yesterday, 1,000 of them filled the cavernous church in Charles Village for a different sort of life-cycle event: a centennial celebration that featured a two-hour Mass and a party."I suppose it's just in the blood," Rosalie Groeninger, who has lived in the community for her entire 90 years, said of SS. Philip and James.
