Elizabeth Koehling, daughter of Rena and Steve Koehling, of Columbia, was named to the dean's list for the 2011 fall semester at Lynchburg College, in Lynchburg, Va. As a Freshman, Koehling was also recently accepted for admittance into the selective athletic training major program at Lynchburg and on April 13, was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the national honor society for college freshmen.

Twenty-three Baltimore County Public Schools students from seven high schools have been named semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program coordinated by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Honored students from Franklin High School include Keenan Albee , Rebekah Green and Erin Smith and, from Pikesville High School, Jay Chernak . Taylor Parton , of Reistertown, and Dennis Rothouse , of Owings Mills, were recently accepted into Phi Eta Sigma, the national freshman honor society, at Salisbury University, Salisbury.

Clarion University senior Joanna Catalano, of Joppa, was selected as a finalist for the 2012 Syed R. Ali-Zaidi Award for Academic Excellence, open to all students of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Catalano received a certificate of recognition and a check for $500 during Clarion University's Academic Excellence Week, April 15-21. Dr. Syed R. Ali-Zaidi, a founding member of PASSHE Board of Governors, established this program to recognize and reward outstanding academic achievement.

Caitlin Marie Juskus, daughter of Bob and Barb Juskus, of Towson, was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma national honor society at Lynchburg College. The society recognizes college freshmen who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement through maintaining a cumulative quality-point average of 3.5 or high during the first year. Juskus is a freshmen psychology major. Two local students were named to Bucknell University's dean's list for the spring 2011 semester: Eve Carlson, of Towson, daughter of Peter and Robin Carlson and a 2008 graduate of Towson High School; and Hugh Shepard, of Towson, son of Michael and Jennifer Shepard and a 2007 graduate of Loyola Blakefield High School.

Karl Streaker of Westminster was named East Coast Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete at Frostburg State University's spring commencement.Mr. Streaker, a graduate of South Carroll High School, graduated magna cum laude and was captain of the Bobcat swim team.He earned a 3.7 grade point average as a mathematics major with a concentration in education. He received the Christa McAuliffe Scholarship for academic excellence in his junior and senior years.Mr. Streaker was named to Phi Eta Sigma, freshmen honor society and Kappa Mu Epsilon, mathematics honor society.

Betty Thompson, a Bryn Mawr School biology teacher, was recently awarded a Certificate of Achievement by the Commonwealth Partnership for her outstanding contributions to science education.*Rahel Teferi, who received her B.A. degree from Goucher College in May, has been elected to the college's Phi Beta Kappa chapter. She was also awarded the Class of 1905 Fellowship and the Gairdner Moment Prize in Biology for superior achievement in biological sciences.*Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece, a freshman at Mount de Sales Academy, won first prize in a short story contest sponsored by Disney Adventures magazine.
