County school officials are seeking state funding to demolish Pershing Hill Elementary School and use the site for a new school that would combine Pershing with West Meade Elementary. The county school system would save $13 million by consolidating the schools rather than upgrading them separately - the option preferred by committees of parents, community members and school officials. Renovations to the two schools would cost $38.5 million, versus $25 million for a new school, said Alex Szachnowicz, chief facilities officer for the school system.

John Pershing Woods, a retired tobacco company foreman, died of complications from a stroke Oct. 15 at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. He was 83. Mr. Woods, a Cockeysville resident since 1980, was born and raised in Durham, N.C. After graduating from high school in 1937, he began working for American Tobacco Co. in Durham. During World War II, he served in Europe as an infantryman in Gen. George S. Patton's 3rd Army. He was discharged with the rank of private in 1945 after he was severely wounded in combat.

The Olympic rings hung from the ceiling of Pershing Elementary School's multipurpose room yesterday over some 300 squirming students who were waiting to greet a real Olympian -- 1988 boxing gold medalist Andrew Maynard.But first there was an introduction from U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, a Democrat who represents the 3rd District. He told the youngsters from Pershing and West Meade elementary schools that the light heavyweight boxer "represents someone who stayed in school and stayed off drugs."

BERNICE Mc WHORTER, age 81 of Indianapolis passed away at Hospice of Baltimore-Gilchrist Center on March 30. In June 1941 she married Virgil Mc Whorter, who preceded her in death in 1991. She is survived by one daughter, Norma S. (Joe) Judd of Columbia, Maryland. Funeral Service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Avenue, Hamilton, OH on April 4 at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Hickory Flat Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10 to 12 noon at the funeral home.

As a member of the Morgan State University chapter of Pershing Angels, the nation's only military drill team sorority, KiAnna Walker can perform many feats with her replica rifle. As per military standard, she can't drop it: On Wednesday evening, Walker demonstrated the 31-movement routine the chapter will perform at the sorority's 40th-anniversary banquet tomorrow, and she knew that if her fake weapon hit the floor, she had to drop and do push-ups before beginning again. Yet the Suffolk, Va., junior, who only a few weeks ago occasionally allowed the rifle to slip through her fingers, showed that the team's five-day-a-week practice sessions had paid off. Dr. James Pershing Isaacs, a surgeon and emergency medical systems expert who established and later served as director of the pediatric emergency department at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Children's Center, died of Alzheimer's disease Monday at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. The former Cockeysville resident was 85. Dr. Isaacs, who was born and raised in Struthers, Ohio, left Ohio University in 1942 to enlist in the Navy, serving as a hospital corpsman in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to Ohio University and earned a bachelor's degree in 1946.
