Its contentious dance is dead, but Perry Hall's boys soccer team plays on. On Friday, after further reviewing the Gators' controversial celebration following Tuesday's 2-1 Class 4A North Region quarterfinal victory at Dulaney, Perry Hall principal George Roberts reversed his decision to forfeit the team's semifinal game, reviving its title hopes. Dulaney fans complained that about a dozen Perry Hall players mocked them at game's end, performing what they perceived as a derisive dance called The Bernie in front of their stands.

It takes a Big Band sound to battle the disco, punk, thrash rock, heavy metal and country-pop now dominating national soundtracks. But that's exactly what the Zim Zemarel Band has done in the greater Baltimore area for the better part of 50 years. And even though Zemarel himself died in 1999, at age 82, his former band mates Gene Bonner, 77, of Perry Hall, and Wayne Hudson, 68, of Pasadena, are still carrying the torch for the band, and for Tommy Dorsey- and Benny Goodman-style 1940s Big Band music itself.

The Perry Hall softball team takes pride in the details. The No. 4 Gators appreciate a sacrifice bunt as much as a big hit. They make sure to get the lead runner, make opponents go station to station to try to bring home a run and have found a knack for getting the big outs. Veteran coach Brian Radcliffe, in his 18th season, urges his players to be "brilliant at the basics. " With No. 7 Mount de Sales visiting on Wednesday, the Gators practiced what Radcliffe has been preaching with a 7-2 win over the Sailors.
