Vocalist Ruby Glover, a vibrant link to Baltimore's rich jazz heritage, died Saturday, a day after collapsing onstage during a performance at the Creative Alliance in East Baltimore. On Friday night, Ms. Glover was thrilled to see a full house gathered for a House of Ruth benefit where she was among the performers. With her silver cropped hair, Ms. Glover, 77, appeared as radiant and polished as ever on stage, recalled friend Megan Hamilton. Emcee Stan Stovall from WBAL-TV introduced Ms. Glover, who performed with the Tom Reyes Trio.

CLARIFICATIONAn article in Sunday's Maryland section describing the Historic Cadillac Parade on Pennsylvania Avenue did not mention the group that staged the event. It was organized by the Pennsylvania Avenue Committee, led by Chairman George Gilliam. The committee also sponsored a gospel, jazz and rhythm-and-blues festival at Robert C. Marshall Field after the parade. The article incorrectly reported that a separate Saturday event, Cool Jazz on the Avenue, was scheduled to continue Sunday.

THREE YEARS ago, when the city gave the old Lafayette Market a $4 million face lift and renamed it Avenue Market, hopes ran high that the newly created venture would become the centerpiece of Pennsylvania Avenue renewal. That has not happened. Instead, the West Baltimore market is in such dire straits that the city recently had to funnel a $200,000 emergency allocation just to keep the electricity on.Worse still, no turnaround is in sight.Hundreds of nearby rowhouses have been allowed to deteriorate or are vacant in anticipation of a huge redevelopment project centering on the demolished Murphy Homes public housing project.

George and Doris Washington have lived about two blocks from Pennsylvania Avenue for nearly 20 years. They've seen a big chunk of it become a dilapidated haven for drug dealers, addicts, and prostitutes. But yesterday when George Washington, 73, saw Martin O'Malley, other elected officials and city leaders on a walking tour of The Avenue, he didn't hesitate to ask Democratic mayoral nominee O'Malley to help clean up the West Baltimore street, once a cultural hub of the black community."I hope you can do something with this neighborhood," Washington said, adding that drug dealers approach senior citizens when they walk to supermarkets or banks along the corridor.

In the wake of rampant drug activity on Westminster's west side, residents, police, prosecutors and politicians have taken up a united fight to rid the area of dealers and addicts -- one street at a time.A check of police reports, court files and recent indictments by a Carroll County grand jury showed the same streets and, in some instances, the same addresses keep appearing in drug activity: Sullivan, Pennsylvania, Kemper and Wimert avenues, and Union, West Main, Green, Liberty and Carroll streets.
