A group of Blue Jays fans laid into Orioles slugger Chris Davis last night with faux-insulting signs, capitalizing on a new social media trend in a pretty outstanding way. The fans tweeted a picture of what they referred to as “Hunter Pence signs,” including signs that said Davis “orders the cold cut combo at Subway,” “wears socks and sandles,” and “puts mayo on fries.” Yesterday's @BlueJays game. @CrushD19 Chris Davis: we're on to you. #BlueJays #HunterPenceSigns pic.twitter.com/iGmQWKLJ9f - Zack Palmer (@MrZackPalmer)

LONDON -- The Channel Tunnel is leaking, and as usual it is the investors in the project who are getting soaked.Shares in Eurotunnel, the company that operates the 31-mile undersea link between Britain and France, plunged yesterday after news reports over the weekend that water was seeping into the tunnel and not draining properly. After dropping nearly 10 percent early in the day, Eurotunnel units -- representing one share in each of the French and British divisions of the company -- recovered somewhat but still closed in London at a record low of 250 pence ($3.95)

Clarification and correctionIt was The Education Beat, not Maryland State Teachers Association President Karl Kirby Pence, who referred here Aug. 25 to the Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore as MSTA's "enemy" (humorously, we thought). Pence called from the Democratic National Convention to request the clarification. On Aug. 4, this column said James Watt invented the steam engine. Jarrettsville reader Gertrude Zvonar submitted encyclopedic proof that it was an English engineer, George Stephenson.

Christa Pence wanted out of the retail business. She was tired of the long department store hours. Her break came about 11 years ago when Pence went in search of a consignment shop where she could sell her clothes. Eventually, she made her way to Rave Reviews, a boutique in Columbia. Although at first she didn't consign her clothes at the shop; she gave the woman running the store some advice. "I gave her some pointers that I thought would help her sell more clothes," said Pence. "She told me I could have her job because she was leaving."

In 2005, hard-core baseball fans read pitcher Felix Hernandez's minor league box scores like signposts on the road to paradise. In 2002, Mark Prior was the object of similar attention. We can go all the way back to Willie Mays bashing pitches for Triple-A Minneapolis in 1951 to observe the phenomenon. Part of the fun in any real or fantasy baseball season comes from anticipating the arrival of elite prospects. But that joy has faded quicker this year than in any I can remember. Here we are in the third week of June, and virtually every major prospect who was considered close to reaching the big leagues at the end of spring training has been called up. Some, such as Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence and the Milwaukee Brewers' Ryan Braun, have become key cogs on teams with playoff dreams.

NEW YORK -- Tate & Lyle PLC has filed a patent-infringement claim in the United States to protect Splenda, one of the sweeteners that accounted for about half of the company's revenue last year. Tate, based in London, filed a case against three Chinese manufacturers and 18 importers and distributors, alleging theft of its manufacturing technology. The complaint was registered Friday with the International Trade Commission in Washington. The commission, whose purpose is to protect U.S. markets from unfair trade practices including patent infringement, can block imports if it decides in Tate's favor.
