I couldn't help but notice a couple of trends with the Ravens' four offseason additions so far. First, the Ravens signed four players who were cut by other teams this past offseason. Why is that significant, other than the chips they might have on their shoulders? By signing players who were released and allowing unrestricted free agents such as Paul Kruger, Cary Williams, Ed Reed and Dannell Ellerbe to sign elsewhere, the Ravens are again setting themselves up to secure a few more compensatory picks in next year's NFL draft.

Loyola freshman attackman Zach Herreweyers and junior defenseman Joe Fletcher were named the ECAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, after helping the Greyhounds to a pair of road victories. It marked the second week in a row that Fletcher received the defensive honor and the second week in a row a Loyola attackman received offensive laurels, following Justin Ward (Old Mill), who was the Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Herreweyers scored a total of seven goals in wins at Georgetown and Michigan, and Fletcher helped the defense hold the Hoyas and Wolverines to a combined 11 goals.

Navy owns an 11-4 advantage in this Patriot League series, and the Midshipmen have won three of the last four meetings. No. 16 Colgate (6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference) has won three consecutive games since dropping back-to-back contests to No. 2 Cornell on March 2 and Hobart three days later. The Raiders are averaging 10.9 goals per game this season and headlined by senior attackman and 2012 Tewaaraton Award winner Peter Baum. Navy (3-5, 1-2) has dropped its last two outings and has averaged just 6.2 goals in those five losses.

The John Carroll girls lacrosse team opened the season Tuesday with a 9-7 win over visiting Spalding. Kara Klages scored three goals to pace the Patriots, who also got scoring from four other players. Mackenzie Reese had the lone assist.

NCAA selection show Monday, 7 p.m. TV: ESPN With less than a minute to go in Saturday night's Patriot League women's basketball tournament final, Navy junior guard Kara Pollinger came out of the game and shared a long embrace with coach Stefanie Pemper. By that time, the second-seeded Mids were well on their way to a 72-53 win over fourth-seeded Holy Cross in front of an announced 1,554 at Alumni Hall, and the two were thoroughly enjoying their third consecutive conference tournament title and corresponding berth in the NCAA tournament.

Alix Membreno had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Audrey Bauer had 13 points to lead Navy to a 60-48 win over Bucknell in the Patriot League women's basketball tournament semifinals Monday night. The second-seeded Mids (20-11, 11-3 Patriot League) got off to a hot start, doubling up Bucknell (15-16, 5-9) at halftime 26-13. But Bucknell staged a comeback midway through the second half. The Bison pulled to within 39-35 with just under 10 minutes to play on a three-point play by Shelby Romine and back-to-back 3-pointers from Audry Dotson and Tyler Craig.

John Carroll's Scott Strappelli wrapped up an outstanding high school wrestling career by helping Maryland's Private School All-Stars beat the 1A-2A and 3A-4A All-Stars. The event, in its 28th year, pits the top senior wrestlers from both public school divisions against one another and their private school counterparts, in a tri-meet hosted by McDaniel College.  The 1A-2A squad featured 10 Maryland State Champions; the 3A-4A had eight champs and the private schools had four.

Michael Jordan's return from his first retirement and baseball experiment in the spring had led to uneven moments, including a second-round playoff exit to the Magic. Then the 1995-96 season started. And the Bulls won their first five games, 10 of their first 11, 23 of their first 26 and on and on and on. In fact, after dropping to 23-3, the Bulls reeled off a franchise-record, 18-game win streak to move to 41-3.

Division I men's lacrosse Navy's Kiernan earns Patriot League honor Navy junior long-stick midfielder Pat Kiernan received Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday, two days after helping lead the Midshipmen to a 20-7 season-opening victory over VMI. Kiernan anchored a defensive effort that held the Keydets to just one goal over the first 30 minutes as Navy jumped out to an 11-1 lead at the half. The Midshipmen held the Keydets off the scoreboard for the first 14 minutes of the game and then over a 23-minute span that stretched across the first three quarters.
