In the two years since Eastern Tech won the Class 2A state baseball championship, Ryan Rivers' baby face doesn't appear to be any closer to having a razor take any hair off it now than then. But there's a lot of maturity in Rivers' game, and his breadth of experience may go a long way toward helping the Mavericks win a second title in three years when they face Middletown tomorrow afternoon at Ripken Stadium. The fact that you can now call Rivers a pitcher rather than a thrower is a reflection of how far he has come as a player and a person.

On any given day, Thomas Lehner can observe an abundance of wildlife from his 1.75-acre property -- from deer to nesting turtles, from snakes to several species of birds. In describing his land, people would assume Lehner lives in one of the bucolic suburbs of Baltimore County -- say Sparks, Long Green or Granite.Better, says Lehner, he lives next to the water in Bowleys Quarters."It's still really very wooded and it gives you a feeling of isolation. It has a very nice rural feel to it," said Lehner, who moved to his waterfront home about eight years ago. "My wife and I lived in a rehab in upper Fells Point with the idea of always having a waterfront [home]

SALISBURY -- Everything that 14th-ranked Dunbar had worked for this season came apart yesterday in a mere two-minute stretch of basketball.Trailing by one midway through the second quarter of their Class 2A, East Region championship game against Parkside, the Poets committed six turnovers in a stretch of eight possessions to fall behind by 10, and they never recovered, finishing their season with a 75-68 loss."

Arnold Jablon can't remember the last time a business in Baltimore County was forced to tear down an illegally built addition. But Jablon, the county's chief zoning official, is threatening to force a Catonsville group home to do just that.Jablon said the owners of Parkside Assisted Living flouted the law by building a 2 1/2-story addition when permits called for a one-story addition, and by then using the new space to house elderly residents."He's making money every month," Jablon said. " He's violating the law. Are we going to allow that?"

FREDERICK -- River Hill's biggest concern at yesterday's state Class 2A state semifinal was transportation. Or lack thereof. The Hawks didn't arrive until 10 minutes before their scheduled 5 p.m. start against Wicomico County's Parkside. They were given 30 minutes to prepare, not that they seemed to need it.Parkside was no match for No. 4-ranked, defending Class 2A state champion River Hill (18-1-0), which earned its third straight trip to a state final with a lopsided 6-1 victory. The Hawks will play Baltimore County's Patapsco, a 1-0 winner over Bethesda-Chevy Chase yesterday, for the state title next Friday or Saturday at UMBC.

YOU MAY HAVE to hang onto your coffee when you travel Parkside Drive. City transportation officials have installed speed "humps" -- the latest hammer that urban and suburban dwellers have in their battle against the lead foot.Residents of the quiet, tree-lined street in Northeast Baltimore that borders Herring Run Park got so fed up with the speeders that they petitioned the Department of Public Works for relief. After a traffic study, engineers decided to install five humps and numerous signs warning drivers of the rough ride to slow the traffic.

Eleven games into the season, Northeast's softball team was 3-8 and looking more like a bad sitcom than a playoff entry. And nobody was laughing. The postseason? The Eagles were just trying to get through the regular portion of the schedule without the same embarrassments that accompanied an error-filled, 9-2 loss to McDonough in late March, and a 15-2 drubbing by Archbishop Spalding that had interrupted a modest, two-game winning streak. There were illnesses, injuries and lots of maneuvering by the Northeast coaches to find replacements.

Torrential rain and wind gusts of up to 40 mph. at South Hagerstown High School brought a second-half halt to last night's Class 2A state semifinal between Wilde Lake (7-5-3) and Parkside (7-8) of Wicomico County. Parkside coach Andy Hall, who has coached the Rams the past 21 years to a 185-83-4 record, had never seen anything to compare to last night's weather.Mother Nature severely tested both teams' sense of humor, which appeared to survive the deplorable conditions, as the two teams sprinted for shelter in jubilation when the contest was officially suspended midway through the second half.

The Parkside Fine Food & Spirits occupies the wide first floor of a midblock building in Lauraville. Its ambience suggests a funky antique store that woke up one day to discover it was a restaurant and bar. It's warm and colorful, and there are old furnishings, such as church pews for booth seating. It's yet another amenity for an emerging neighborhood that appears ready and willing to support businesses that respond to its needs and desires. There are so many young families in the northeast corridor, and Parkside means to be a welcoming place for hip parents and children day and night.

Last November if you had asked me to recommend a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner a week before the big day, I would have said, "Good luck with that." But with the economy in the tank, I don't think you'll have trouble finding a place this year. Your best bet might be to go to Open Table (opentable.com). Make your way to the Baltimore/Maryland page and click on the link to Thanksgiving 2008. Fill in the time you want and number of guests, and you'll get a list of available restaurants.
