A 39-year-old man was wounded after a gunman opened fire in a Northeast Baltimore barbershop early Friday, police said. Officers responding to a report of a shooting in the 4300 block of Belair Rd. around 12:30 a.m. found the victim in a rear bathroom suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg, a police spokesman said. Witnesses told police that a man in a grey hooded sweatshirt ran inside the Cutz 4 Kingz Barbershop and fired at least once. It was unclear if the victim was an employee or a customer — a man who answered the phone at the barbershop hung up on a reporter — but police said he was expected to survive his injuries.

The Parkside Fine Food & Spirits occupies the wide first floor of a midblock building in Lauraville. Its ambience suggests a funky antique store that woke up one day to discover it was a restaurant and bar. It's warm and colorful, and there are old furnishings, such as church pews for booth seating. It's yet another amenity for an emerging neighborhood that appears ready and willing to support businesses that respond to its needs and desires. There are so many young families in the northeast corridor, and Parkside means to be a welcoming place for hip parents and children day and night.

Here's the part where you tell me how wrong (or how right!) I was on a review. This week's bar review is about Parkside Sports Bar and Pub in Canton , which finally gets a proper print review. Jeremy Trucker reviewed it for the blog back in the Fall. There's a unverified rumor that the owner Eric Matthias is trying to sell the bar, so it seemed like a good idea to review the bar before or if it was taken over by someone else. As it is, "Parkside is an animated corner bar, and with some real investment it could become a genuinely great sports bar. It already has the real estate to draw groups of sports fans.

They shot 18 percent from the field and missed 23 of 29 three-point attempts. And still nearly won.Against a less physical Parkside team, the top-seeded Wildcats got to within three points in the final minutes before falling, 54-47, at Arundel High School.Though the Wicomico County power will advance to UMBC Friday for the state semifinals, Northwestern coach Lillian Brown said her team's strong showing was something to build on."

On Friday, there will be a pingpong tournament in Baltimore. It won't take place at an arena or a YMCA. It's at a bar. The pingpong tournament is one of the distinguishing features of Parkside Sports Bar and Pub, which opened in Canton late last year. Parkside is a sports bar with modest ambitions. Its casual setup and fairly small beer selection suggest it wants to just be a neighborhood hangout. But its size, its pool and pingpong tables, its gregarious bartenders and customers make it an upbeat place to watch a game - or play one - after work.

The Eastern Tech Mavericks saw Tuesday how fickle of a game baseball can be. After scoring six runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Mavericks surrendered 10 runs in the bottom half of the fourth and lost a Class 2A state semifinal game against Parkside, 10-6, at Arundel. Holding the Rams scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning, Eastern Tech loaded the bases in the last frame before junior center fielder Nick McElfish's drive up the middle was handled by junior shortstop Tyler Illian, who then flipped to second for the final out. "This might be the team that I'm most proud of, with all that they've been through," Mavericks coach Spike McElfish said after the game, referring to a number of injuries endured by the team during the season.

Torrential rain and wind gusts of up to 40 mph. at South Hagerstown High School brought a second-half halt to last night's Class 2A state semifinal between Wilde Lake (7-5-3) and Parkside (7-8) of Wicomico County. Parkside coach Andy Hall, who has coached the Rams the past 21 years to a 185-83-4 record, had never seen anything to compare to last night's weather.Mother Nature severely tested both teams' sense of humor, which appeared to survive the deplorable conditions, as the two teams sprinted for shelter in jubilation when the contest was officially suspended midway through the second half.

Make no mistake: It is tradition that drives the mental part of the Fallston field hockey program. And when the physical part is as good as this year's team, good things happen.Pam Gauss scored two minutes into yesterday's state Class 2A championship game and a stout defense keyed by sweeper Julie Haire made it stand up for a rainy 1-0 victory over Parkside (11-4-1) at Goucher College yesterday.Except for a just-wide shot by Susan Mackley in the second half, Gauss' shot was really the only scoring opportunity for the Cougars.

In his team's biggest game of the season, Fallston pitcher Jordan Lozzi came with his "A" game, striking out 10 Northern-Calvert batters on the way to a 6-2 victory in the state 3A semifinals at Joe Cannon Stadium. "I think sometimes I had trouble with my fastball," said the self-effacing Lozzi, a senior who is 7-0 this season. "But my curve I was able to get over for strikes." Fallston, No. 2 in The Baltimore Sun's poll and 20-1, advances to Saturday's 7 p.m. 3A state final at Ripken Stadium against Frederick, which won Tuesday night's second semifinal, 5-3, against a stubborn Towson team that did everything it could to manufacture runs.
