Nobody, especially John Brady, expected it would end like this."I thought we'd score a lot more points," the Annapolis coach said. So did everyone else at Cole Field House for last night's state Class 4A semifinal between the defending champion Runnin' Panthers and Parkdale. After all, in December Annapolis had beaten the same team 110-101. And last night Parkdale led 44-43 at the half, putting the century mark again seemingly within reach. But a funny thing happened on the way to the scoreboard.

He absolutely refused to make excuses or curse his fate. And he couldn't understand why the faces of those around him looked so grim.Annapolis boys basketball coach John Brady emerged from his team's locker room Thursday night in relatively good spirits, considering the top-seeded Panthers had just been upset by No. 4 Parkdale of Prince George's County, 62-60, in the Class 4A state semifinals at Cole FieldHouse. This was a man who did not need consoling. Not yet, at least."I'm not disappointed, I'm not depressed, I'm not down," he insisted, trying to lighten the mood.

WASHINGTON -- Southern coach Meredith Smith likes to point out that his team's strength is defense. Last night at Georgetown's McDonough Arena, the Bulldogs put on a defensive clinic in the championship game of the D.C. Armory Board-Trills Holiday Classic, romping past Archbishop Carroll, 72-46.The Bulldogs (8-1) got outstanding performances for the third straight day from senior co-captains Kwame Evans, who led the scoring with 23, and Derrick Watkins with 13. Sophomore point guard Damon Cason scored eight and was named tournament MVP. But those offensive numbers came mostly as a result of the lightning-quick Bulldogs defense.

NEWARK, Del. -- The scoreboard at Delaware Stadium, which gives everything but the up-to-date stock quotations, let everyone know that Daryl Brown had gained 199 yards rushing with three minutes remaining in last Saturday's game against Villanova.Up until a couple of years ago, the pile-driving fullback of the Fighting Blue Hens wouldn't have known if this was good or bad. "I wasn't much interested in football or any sports for that matter. After school, I used to go home and sleep," Daryl said.

Success breeds interest. And 14th-year Annapolis basketball coach John Brady has spent the last week answering a myriad of questions concerning his Panthers, who will make their 11th Class 4A state semifinal appearance tonight against Parkdale.Among the most frequent of queries is, "With an overall 298-47 record, John, wouldn't you feel special to win the last two games for your second title and then retire with 300 wins?"Brady answers with both sincerity and humor but wants to get one thing right out in the open: "If we win the championship, it'll be more for the players than for me," he said.

ARLINGTON, Va. -- No. 2-ranked Southern took its "we try harder" campaign for national recognition on the road for the second straight week and showed nothing to disprove its fans' belief that the Bulldogs, like top-ranked Dunbar, are one of the top high school basketball teams in the nation.Displaying a tenacious pressing defense, sparked by sophomore point guard Damon Cason (nine steals) and senior forward Kwame Evans, Southern outscored Quince Orchard of Montgomery County 33-8 in a brilliant third quarter en route to an 89-44 victory in the opening round of the D.C. Armory Board-Trills Holiday Classic at Bishop O'Connell High School yesterday.
