HERNDON, Va. -- Jack Pardee is willing to say he still has fond memories of his days in Washington."I had a great time there," he said yesterday. That's about all he'll say about his days there. He came to Washington with George Allen's Over-the-Hill Gang in 1971 when football became a passion in the nation's capital.Retiring as a player at the end of the 1972 season, he came back in 1978 as Redskins head coach. He was so eager to return that he walked away from the Chicago Bears head coaching job.In his second year, he came within a Roger Staubach comeback of a division title.

Except for an appearance in the Super Bowl later this season by his Houston Oilers, Jack Pardee would enjoy nothing more than beating Jack Kent Cooke's Washington Redskins in RFK Stadium Sunday. That's because Cooke fired Pardee as Redskins coach after a 6-10 season in 1981, and it took Pardee almost a decade to get another head coaching job in the NFL.But Pardee proved he's a survivor throughout his distinguished career in football, both as a player and a coach. He beat cancer with a risky, 11-hour operation in the middle of his All-Pro career as a linebacker.

As a holiday treat, Olney Theatre Center is reprising its delightfully imaginative 1994 production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella." The only musical Rodgers and Hammerstein created specifically for television, "Cinderella" imparts an encouraging lesson for both adults and children as the Fairy Godmother encourages the title character to follow her dreams.Olney's revival is directed by Carol Graham Lehan, who choreographed the 1994 version. The cast features Erin Dilly as Cinderella, Terri Mazzarella as the Fairy Godmother and Helen Hedman, repeating the role of the Queen.

WASHINGTON -- Major central bank intervention in currenc markets last week appeared to be aimed at slowing the dollar's decline rather than halting it altogether, analysts say."It hasn't been the type of intervention that is designed to turn the market around," Scott Pardee, chairman of Yamaichi Securities, said.Nicholas Sargen, director of bond market research for Salomon Brothers, agreed the intervention was aimed mainly at slowing the descent and preventing a "free-fall."U.S. authorities "care about the dollar if they think it [a decline]

HERNDON, Va. -- Washington Redskins punter Ralf Mojsiejenko, who enjoys life, found his intentional safety against the Cowboys last Sunday "an interesting experience."There he was, standing in the back of the end zone, holding thball, not punting it, while 53,804 customers and a television audience waited to see what he would do.With the Redskins leading by only 19-13 and the ball at their 2 with 1:56 to go, the interest became almost unbearable to some of the non-customers along the Redskins' bench before Mojo stepped over the back line to make the safety safe.

MIAMI -- Miami's Sammie Smith coughed up the ball on a first-and-goal dive play at the 1-yard line yesterday, and Houston's Cris Dishman recovered in the end zone with 3 minutes, 10 seconds left to clinch a 17-13 victory.Smith's fumble was his second at the goal line in as many weeks. The earlier bobble sparked a 42-7 Kansas City rout as Chris Martin returned it 100 yards for a touchdown."It was the same play they fumbled on in Kansas City," Houston coach Jack Pardee said. "We were hoping for a repeat."
