GymnasticsThe Harford Gymnastics boys team competed in the Maryland Gymnastics Cup last weekend at UMBC, which drew competitors from seven states representing 29 gymnastics teams.The Class V gymnasts placed second in the team competition with a combined score of 158.8.Jon Wainwright earned gold on vault with 9.4 in the Class V, age 10-11 division. He finished fifth on parallel bars (9.3), seventh on horizontal bar (8.2) and seventh all-around (52.8).Bret Bailey placed third on horizontal bar with 8.8, fourth on parallel bars with 9.4 and fifth all-around with 53.3.

Westminster's B and C Carroll County Football League teams closed out their seasons Saturday with Turkey Bowl games against teams from Baltimore and Harford counties.The C squad topped Overlea, 20-6, and the B team lost, 36-0, to Harford County.Against Overlea, quarterback Collin Angell ran 12 yards for Westminster's first score and hit end Shaun Myrick for the extra point.Later in the quarter, Angell hit Ryan Bordner for a 47-yard score to make it 13-0.The Terrors' Clipper Lennon ran 28 yards for a third-quarter score and Angell tossed to Janowitz for the extra point.

In six steps, the saying goes, each of us can be connected to all the people in the world. This week, children attending Fulton Elementary discovered that they were only one step away from Olympic gymnast Elise Ray. Sally Swygert, a Fulton parent, has known the Ray family for years. Elise Ray attended Wilde Lake High School.

BARCELONA, Spain -- The American has one gold medal. The Belarussian has six.The American will appear on "The Today Show" this morning, and, if everything breaks right, could become one of the Wheaties cover boys. The Belarussian is going home to a country where cereal is a luxury and the future is as uncertain as the next harvest.Last night, Trent Dimas of Albuquerque, N.M., and Vitaly Scherbo of Minsk soared higher than all the rest in the men's gymnastics apparatus finals at the 1992 Olympics.

In a weekend matchup of the top two squirt hockey teams in the Capitol Beltway League, Wales Division, the Howard County B1 Huskies defeated Montgomery, 3-1.The win kept the Huskies undefeated in the CBHL at 11-0-3.The key to victory was their ability to stop the Montgomery power play. The defense, anchored by goalie Lenny Bernard didn't allow a goal until the final minute, playing a man down much of the way.Howard County goals were scored by Drew Zinchiak, Ryan Fenton and Kule Chacon, with assists going to Chacon, Justin Keller and Keith Milli.

Softball The Western Howard County Fever 2K took second place in the 12U division of the North Carroll Hotshots Early Bird invitational April 13-14. The team went 2-1 in pool play, then defeated the Crofton Rebels and the Littlestown Thunder, 13-1 and 13-4, in the elimination round.

`TC BARCELONA, Spain -- There is a rock 'n' roll gymnast from Minsk who likes fast cars, loud music and dancing in discos.And since a pocketful of rubles can't pay for a tankful of gas, he's even willing to take his high-flying act on the road for the dollar or the deutsche mark.Meet Vitaly Scherbo, the men's all-around gymnastics champion at the 1992 Summer Olympics.Last night, Scherbo got his gold with an aerial display that was as spectacular as it was historic. He scored 59.025 points and led a medal sweep by gymnasts of the soon-to-vanish Unified Team.

Sandymount basketball* Grades 3-5 boys -- Andy Kuchera scored nine points and Ryan Cheney eight to lead Black to a 29-20 win over Green. Green's Adam Baker led all scorers with 14 points.Red nipped Gold, 26-25, despite a 17-point performance by Gold's Kyle Zentz. Tim Love paced the Red attack with 14 points.Matt Thompson's 12 points paced Maroon to a 20-12 victory over Orange. Adam Ridgway scored seven for Orange.* Grades 6-8 boys -- Adam Reese scored a game-high 22 points for Blue. But Maroon was the winner, 46-43.

GymnasticsLast weekend, Perna Gymnastics' Levels V, VI, and VII teams traveled to Sewell, N.J., to compete at Atlantic Coast Gymnastics.At Level V, Kira Armacost scored 7.40 on vaulting (fourth), 6.55 on parallel bars (fourth), 8.85 on balance beam (first), 7.25 on floor exercises (fifth) for a fourth-place all-around score of 30.05.Megan Newman scored 8.45 on vault (second), 8.10 on bars (third), 8.15 on beam (fifth), 7.35 on floor (ninth) and second-place all-around of 32.05.Lindsay Winter scored 7.55 on vault (third)

GymnasticsFour members of the Carroll Challengers had ranking performances in last weekend's Harford Holiday gymnastics tournament.Jamie Schlipper (Level 5, 9-up age group) outpointed 32 other contestants with an all-around score of 34.00. She scored 9.20 on balance beam (first), 8.90 on floor exercises (third), 7.70 on vaulting (fourth) and 8.20 on parallel bars (fifth).Also at Level 5 (7-8 age group), Kenna Haden was 7.40 on beam (fifth) and sixth on floor.Tammy Wilson (Level 7, 12-14) was fifth of 30 contestants on floor exercises, with an 8.05.
