AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The theory came from Brad Faxon, the proof from those who tried in vain to stop Tiger Woods from winning his third Masters and seventh major championship yesterday at Augusta National Golf Club. While Faxon was barely in contention, finishing tied for 12th and 10 strokes behind Woods at 2-under-par 286, the veteran PGA Tour pro could see what was happening to those closer to the lead. "These guys are behind and they know they've got to make some birdies," said Faxon, who shot 71 yesterday.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Most figured Chris DiMarco would fade quietly back into obscurity in yesterday's third round of the 65th Masters. They figured that leading after each of the first two rounds might have been a fluke for DiMarco, and the prospect of playing with Tiger Woods would bring him back to reality. Guess what? The skeptics were wrong. While DiMarco went from a one-shot lead to being two behind Woods after shooting an even-par 72, the 32-year-old journeyman stood up well under the pressure that comes with playing in his first Masters, as well as being paired with the world's best player.

The writer of this course review is a Columbia resident and frequent golfer who has played most courses in Central Maryland. Almost daily, power carts are lined up near the pro shop with windshield tags bearing golfers' names and hole assignments for an outing. That's the only way most of us can play golf at Turf Valley Resort. Because it's private, play officially is limited to members and hotel guests. But Turf Valley - its main entry off U.S. 40 on the west end of Ellicott City - was host to about 200 outings last year for charities and other causes.
