The first conversation Derrell Edwards had with High Point basketball coach Scott Cherry was a memorable one. Edwards and his South Plains College teammates were preparing for the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament. But before Edwards left Levelland, Texas for Hutchinson, Kan., the former Dunbar star had what proved to be the first of many chats with Cherry. “The first thing he said was, 'Derrell Edwards, please tell me you're not signed with [anybody]

While the entire George Zimmerman/Tryavon Martin issue is a tragedy on many fronts, I am outraged by the lack of action from the mainstream media and law enforcement concerning the bounty on Mr. Zimmerman offered by the Black Panthers. I am not a legal expert, but this should be a crime. The lack of reporting by the media and the inaction taken by authorities shows that if a group is of the preferred, politically correct ethnic background, they can do whatever they want with no fear of repercussion.

St. Frances seniors Jordan Lewis, Carey Cheek and Harold Myles each scored three runs Monday evening to propel the Panthers to a 15-2, six-inning victory over Dunbar in a first-round President's Cup game at Mount St. Joseph. The result left both sides frustrated. St. Frances' players thought they could have done more, while Dunbar coach Travis Blackston felt his team could have played smarter. "We just made too many errors," Blackston said. "Six or seven of my players have been playing since Little League.

When Sean Farr takes the court for Baltimore City Community College on Tuesday in Danville, Ill., in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II men's basketball tournament, he'll have his friend and teammate Carlos Smith to thank. And Farr's thoughts won't be far from his late father, Sean. Basketball wasn't in Farr's plans when he was a senior at Dunbar in 2009. Considered to be one of the top 50 wide receiver recruits in the nation, he originally signed with Louisville to play football.

On Friday morning, safety Haruki Nakamura became the latest Ravens free agent to sign elsewhere, agreeing to terms with the Carolina Panthers. He is the fourth of the team's 12 unrestricted free agents -- and the third member of a Ravens defense that ranked No. 2 overall in 2011 -- to depart. Nakamura, a versatile defensive back whom the Ravens drafted in the sixth round in 2008, was a key contributor on special teams, a backup safety and at times was employed as a nickel cornerback against multiple-wide receiver sets.

An opportunity to repeat as Baltimore Catholic League champion didn't come easy to the John Carroll boys basketball team. In Friday's quarterfinal against St. Maria Goretti, the No. 3 Patriots needed three overtime periods to advance. In Saturday's semifinal against St. Frances, they got a free throw from senior forward Jarred Jones with .3 of a second on the clock to come away with a controversial 42-41 win over the No. 10 Panthers at Stevenson University in Owings Mills. It's the eighth straight time John Carroll has gotten the better of St. Frances over the past two seasons.

Meade guard Imani Bailey looked as though she could barely stand up in the final minutes of last night's game at Annapolis, but the senior fought off a sore right hip to lead the No. 7 Mustangs to a 65-58 victory, securing first place inAnne Arundel County. In the two-minute, 10-2 run that finished the game, Bailey scored six points, had two steals and dished out an assist. She said the hip has been bothering her for about three weeks, although she could obviously play through the pain.

The John Carroll boys basketball team traveled to St. Frances on Tuesday night with nothing fancy in mind. The Patriots wanted to control the flow of the game by playing sound defense and varying their pace on offense. Mission accomplished. Outscoring the No. 3 Panthers by 10 points in a take-charge third quarter, the No. 6 Patriots came away with a 70-61 win to continue their recent dominance of St. Frances. It's the sixth straight time the Patriots have defeated the Panthers, including the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League title games last year.
