Baltimore County firefighters battled a blaze for two hours Sunday afternoon in Owings Mills. The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. in two-story building in the 3100 block of Blendon Road, county Fire Director Glenn Blackwell said. It took about two hours for firefighters to get the flames under control. Though several people were inside at the time of the blaze, no injuries were reported, Blackwell said. The address is listed as the Elizabeth Flick Charitable Foundation, according to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, but Blackwell could not confirm the building's occupants.

After receiving several mailing pieces and listening to Baltimore County Council District 2 candidate Vicki Almond at many public forums, I feel it is time to get the facts out about the lack of need for a new middle school in Owings Mills ("Democrats line up for 2nd District seat," Aug. 16). This is not my opinion, but rather, the facts disseminated by the Baltimore County Department of Education which state: "Based on enrollment projections…The middle schools in this part of the county are under capacity, and the ten year projections do not indicate that more capacity is needed to accommodate middle school students at this time".

Michael Freedman, an attorney who lives in Owings Mills, had an idea to combine his 45 years of experience practicing law with technology that helps motorists in need. Freedman developed a Personal Injury Assistant App that is free for users of iPhones and Droids. He is the first lawyer in Maryland to introduce this technology. The app helps motorists in the event of a car accident as it automatically prompts them to gather all of the key information needed to document the accident right at the scene and then submits it directly to the Freedman's law office in real-time.

In the tussle over mega-development projects in Owings Mills, it's about time we had an adult in the room. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, who is ordinarily loath to interfere with the County Council's prerogatives when it comes to land use and zoning, is stepping into that role with his promise to veto a piece of legislation that amounted to a massive giveaway to two developers. The bill, passed by the council on Monday, represented legislative sausage making at its worst and could have swamped Owings Mills' already overtaxed infrastructure.
