Darnell Dantzler Edmondson The Red Storm suffered several heartbreaking losses this season, particularly a buzzer-beating defeat in overtime against No. 1 Dunbar in the Baltimore City Division I championship game. But those setbacks served an important purpose when it mattered most for No. 5 Edmondson (22-5). Finally reaching the state tournament at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center after four straight losses in the Class 2A North regional championship game, Edmondson showed poise to close out a double-overtime win, 60-56, over Oakdale in the semifinals and a 54-52 victory over Wicomico for the program's first state title.

The Baltimore Police Department has already gone over its overtime budget for the fiscal year, which ends in June, but Police Commissioner Anthony Batts says he will rein in the agency's spending. "We will be in budget at the end of the fiscal year. Period," Batts said during an interview at police headquarters last week. How, exactly, remains unclear. Pressed for details this week, Batts said he has a plan but needs approval from City Hall. The Police Department's overall operating budget this year is $410 million, and there's been a $3.4 million spillover on overtime spending.

Stevenson ended last season ranked 10th in Division III in defense, surrendering an average of just 6.1 goals. Opponents are finding it nearly as difficult to dent that unit in 2013. The Mustangs (6-0) - ranked second in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll - are allowing just 7.0 goals per game. Since Rochester Institute of Technology posted 11 goals in a one-goal overtime loss on Feb. 27, opposing offenses have scored just 15 times in three contests.

For a team that has struggled with possession this season, the Loyola women's lacrosse team certainly set the right tone early in Saturday's game against James Madison. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, they could not sustain it beyond the first half. The No. 12 Greyhounds scored the first four goals and shut out James Madison before halftime, but the Dukes seized the momentum early in the second half and dominated possession in overtime for a 9-8 victory at Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex.

If you first don't succeed, try again. And then, if needed, try yet again. The Edmondson boys basketball had the final possession at the end of regulation and again in the first overtime with the score tied against Oakdale, from Frederick County, but the No. 5 Red Storm was unable to convert the needed points that would send it to the Class 2A state title game. In the same spot in the second overtime, Edmondson senior guard Darius Walker changed the plan. Once again appearing to hold the ball for the final shot, Walker attacked the basket earlier than expected, hitting a running layup with 31 seconds left to give the Red Storm a two-point lead.

These two sides have split the last six meetings, but Navy won last year's contest, 10-6, at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Towson (2-4) is still smarting from a 10-9 overtime setback to Marist last Friday night in which neither team scored in the fourth quarter and the Tigers failed to score on an extra-man opportunity. Navy (3-3) snapped a three-game losing skid with a 12-11 decision against Lafayette last Saturday. The starting attack of juniors Sam Jones and Tucker Hull and freshman T.J. Hanzsche combined for eight goals and two assists.

Towson's 10-9 overtime setback to Marist on Friday night wasn't just the team's fourth mark in the loss column. It was a missed opportunity. After opening the season with three consecutive losses, the Tigers thought they had turned the corner with back-to-back victories over Mercer and Mount St. Mary's. But the lack of execution against the Red Foxes was puzzling to Towson coach Shawn Nadelen. “It's frustrating because I thought we had executed at a pretty high level against Mount St. Mary's offensively, and I was looking forward to having our guys do the same thing,” he said Monday morning.
