Sarah Hogan has scored other goals for Towson, but it's doubtful any have been more important or timely than against visiting James Madison on Sunday. The junior scored with 26 seconds left in double overtime to give the No. 17 Tigers a 10-9 win and the regular-season Colonial Athletic Association championship. Both teams entered the game with unblemished conference records, and both knew it was winner take all for the title. "I saw that Kelly [Custer] was being doubled and had nowhere to go, and she did a great job of getting me the ball," said Hogan, who fired a bullet past James Madison's Schylar Healy for the game winner.

Calvert Hall's Ryan Brown has been somewhat of a forgotten man on No. 1 Calvert Hall's attack unit this season, vying for playing time on a talented roster after being a starter most of last season. On Friday night at Paul Angelo Russo Stadium, the Cardinals remembered the senior headed to Johns Hopkins just in the nick of time, as he scored the winning goal in a 5-4 overtime victory over Severn. The No. 8 Admirals came into the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game almsot as an afterthought but left with the respect of the Cardinals after tying the game on a beautiful shot by junior midfielder David Jones with 1:05 left in regulation.

The ballyhooed matchup between two of the top leading candidates for this year's Tewaaraton Award wasn't going to materialize with Cornell senior attackman Rob Pannell expected to miss up to six weeks with a broken bone in his left foot. That — and an ailing left hip — didn't make much difference to Virginia senior attackman Steele Stanwick , who lifted the No. 1 Cavaliers to a 9-8 overtime win against the No. 3 Big Red at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday.

The player that the Ravens spent all week trying to devise a way to contain was finally stopped. Robert Griffin III wasn't on the field after the Washington Redskins' rookie took one more punishing hit in an afternoon filled with them, the last by Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, injuring Griffin's knee and knocking him out of the game. All the Ravens' defense had to do was get one stop against a rookie backup quarterback and a victory and a playoff berth would have been theirs.

Riders of Maryland Transit Administration buses could face longer waits and less reliable service as a result of stricter overtime limits adopted because of budget cuts, the agency said yesterday. Jawauna Greene, an MTA spokeswoman, said the agency can no longer exceed its overtime cap when employees call in with an unscheduled absence or are late for work. In such cases, the agency may be forced to skip runs on certain routes. "There will never be an instance where the entire line is shut down, but there may be delays," Greene said.

The Baltimore City Fire Department is considering reducing its budget next year by ending the practice of filling vacant shifts by paying overtime, meaning that some truck or engine companies could be shut down on days with staff shortages, Fire Chief James S. Clack said yesterday. The proposed policy, known as "rotating company closures," could save the department $5.5 million in overtime expenditures, Clack said. Mayor Sheila Dixon directed all city agencies last month to reduce their budgets to save $65 million next year.
