Tomorrow night, John Knoll will open his battered brown case, pick up his silver trumpet and prepare for "the walk." For 32 years, Knoll and other residents of the first block of Overbrook Road in Catonsville have serenaded their neighbors with Christmas carols. The carolers start the night with a potluck dinner at one of their houses. Then they march up and down the block, greeting those who couldn't attend the dinner. The block's most familiar dog, Shadow, often walks with them. Knoll's melodies serve as the foundation for the crooners.

No. 1 Douglass hasn't lost its knack for fourth-quarter comebacks, overcoming Philadelphia's Overbrook, 70-65, in one of the marquee games in yesterday's Mayor's Academy boys basketball tournament at Coppin State. Tyler Smith scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Ducks (12-0) while junior guard Gerald Brown added 19 including seven of eight shooting from the free-throw line. Angelo Hernandez led Overbrook (8-5) with 19 and Elijah Talbert had 14. Smith, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, took command of the final eight minutes with 12 points as the Ducks rallied from a seven-point deficit.

Maryland School for the Blind wrestler Kelvin Atkinson struggled in the early going of his 130-pound match against his Overbrook (Pa.) opponent, but that didn't matter to the cheerleaders, who chanted, "Let's go, Kelvin, let's go!" or to the parents and other students who sat on folding chairs and cheered for their guy in this tri-meet, or to school president Mike Bina and athletic director Wayne White, who were also in the crowd. It didn't much matter to Atkinson, a senior at the Parkville school, either, because all of them knew one thing.
