TORONTO -- For seven innings yesterday, Scott Erickson pitched in the shadow of Roger Clemens, a three-time Cy Young Award winner with a bigger reputation and a bigger fastball. Both pitchers left the game holding a lead. But in the latest in a number of defining moments for him, Erickson left last. While the Toronto Blue Jays' starter explained the fatigue that sapped him after 103 pitches, Erickson answered for a 7 1/3 -inning performance strong enough to lift the Orioles out of their deepest funk of the season.

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The winter chill that has descended on the Gulf Coast could not keep Mike Mussina from making the most of his second Grapefruit League start. He pitched three innings yesterday in the Orioles' 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at McKechnie Field, and has yet to give up a hit in exhibition play. But to hear Mussina tell it, yesterday's performance did not bear any resemblance to the two perfect innings he pitched against the Toronto Blue Jays in his 1992 spring debut Sunday.

ATLANTA -- There are flameouts and then there are flameouts, but few flameouts are quite like the pyrotechnics the Atlanta Braves pulled off here last night in the seventh game of the National League Championship Series.Just one out from giving back a 3-1 series lead to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Braves staged an incredible ninth-inning comeback to win, 3-2.Reserve catcher Francisco Cabrera slapped a hit to left field on a 2-1 pitch with two out in the bottom of the ninth to drive in David Justice and Sid Bream with the tying and winning runs and give the Braves their second straight National League title.
