Washington. -- After three decades of teaching, I am surprised by very little in academe. But I must confess that after a great deal of traveling over the past year in some distant parts of the United States, I was truly disappointed to find college and university libraries making it difficult, if not impossible, for anyone other than their own students and faculty to enter.Mind you, I have no quarrel with visitors in an academic librar having to produce credentials to check out books, but to require visitors to go through an identification process simply to enter library doors and make use of materials in-house goes against my sense of what an academic institution is all about, especially today when reading programs, including Project Literacy, are so enthusiastically endorsed throughout the land.

The East Columbia Library in Owen Brown village, which is intended to relieve crowding at the county's main library, won't open until August because of construction complications. The 46,000-square-foot building on Cradlerock Way was to have opened in January. The building's "unique" design, particularly its glass curtain walls, is the main reason for the delay, said Jim Wilson, chief of the county's construction inspection division. The curved walls are made of floor-to-ceiling panels of tinted glass, supported by a structural frame.

Last week's question: The Howard County Central Library in Columbia will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays in late spring and summer. All other branches of the library system are closed Sundays through Sept. 4. Do you plan take advantage of the Sunday hours? And do you think all county libraries should be open Sundays during the summer? Sunday hours urged for all branches Ever since I moved to Howard County, I've not understood why all county libraries aren't open on Sundays. What better public service to be open all weekend than a public library.

Lynn Janney was baffled: Why were second- and third-graders leaving Govans Elementary School during the school day and crossing York Road? Simple, a teacher replied: to get to a library. The school didn't have one, so pupils used the city library across the street. A year after that discovery, Janney, a reading volunteer at Govans from Butler in Baltimore County, and her friend, Lynn Rauch of Ruxton, have changed that - raising $50,000 and applying a good deal of sweat to create an inviting place in school for Govans' 400 pupils to read and learn.
