Days until opening ceremonies: 13.Taking precautions: Georgia National Guardsmen may be asked to wear body armor while patrolling the Olympic Village because a sergeant was wounded by gunfire at his post Thursday. Thomas Bentley, 43, was treated and released from Georgia Baptist Medical Center. The bullet that hit Bentley probably was fired from about half a mile away during a Fourth of July celebration, said National Guard Adj. Gen. Bill Bland. The shooting was one of three incidents in or near Olympic sites late Thursday and early yesterday.

For Ravens rookie wide receiver Devard Darling, the Olympics are a family affair. Darling's sister-in-law, Tonique Williams-Darling of the Bahamas, won a gold medal in the 400 meters Tuesday with a time of 49.41, beating world champion Ana Guevara of Mexico. "It's crazy," Devard Darling said. "Not just for my family, but for the whole country. We already went through it before with my cousin winning the bronze in 1992, but to win the gold is unbelievable." The cousin was Frank Rutherford, who won the bronze medal in triple jump in Barcelona becoming the first Bahamian to win a field medal.
