Love, death, jealousy, obsession, violence - these are at the heart of Bizet's Carmen. Distill the four-hour opera down to its essence - as Peter Brook and his collaborators have done in their 80-minute adaptation - and presumably these core characteristics become more intense. But director Jim Petosa's production at Olney Theatre Center is surprisingly lacking in intensity. Despite a strong lead performance - powerfully acted as well as sung - by Stephanie Chigas, La Tragedie de Carmen has an almost clinical feel.

In the role of playwright Eric Weiss, actor Paul Morella hides immense rage, fear and pain behind an affable smile. Those emotions are telegraphed by the amused, downward glance, the wry upward tilt of Morella's lips. In an instant, the people in Weiss' life who have been pummeling his ego - the playwright's withholding father, his estranged wife - are dispatched to a safe remove. Morella watches them flail away silently, as if they were under water. If you go Brooklyn Boy runs at the Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Road, through Aug. 5. OLNEY -- There is a scene at the end of the first act of Olney Theatre's production of "I Hate Hamlet" in which the ghost of John Barrymore challenges a television actor named Andrew Rally to a sword fight. As Barrymore thrusts and parries with swashbuckling bravado, Andrew ducks, runs for cover and, when cornered, resorts to Three Stooges-style eye jabs.If there were "Cliffs Notes" for Paul Rudnick's "I Hate Hamlet" -- as there are, of course, for Shakespeare -- they'd merely have to describe this duel and it would be evident that this is a comedy about a challenge issued by the great Barrymore to a middling TV star, or, in a broader sense, issued by holy theater to profane TV.I don't have to tell you which one wins.
