Dimitri and Olga Kargman opened the Baltimore area's first "Russian pharmacy" in March with a built-in clientele of immigrant Russian Jews looking for herbal remedies and prescription drugs with instructions written in their native language. They quickly forged a relationship with a Russian doctor, Victoria V. Tsinberg, who sent patients from her Northwest Baltimore office to the couple's new Health-Rite Pharmacy in Pikesville. But after a little more than a month, say the Kargmans, Dr. Tsinberg stopped sending prescriptions their way, routing them instead to another new "Russian pharmacy" called Five Star.

A three decade-old missing person case prompted Wednesday's daylong search by police and the FBI outside a Pasadena home, though no human remains have been positively identified, a source with knowledge of the investigation said yesterday. Police were searching for the body of Karen Kamsch, a teenage girl who lived at the home on Wishing Rock Road with her grandmother and disappeared in the mid-1970s. According to a neighbor, she was presumed to be a runaway at the time. Despite news media reports that a body or human remains had been located in a well on the property, authorities did not find anything conclusive, according to the source.

"The Handmaid of Desire," by John L'Heureux. Soho. 264 pages. $23.It has often struck me as strange that many publishers shy away from academic novels, presumably on the grounds that fiction with such a rarefied setting can only attract a small readership. Surely a high proportion of readers have at least a nodding acquaintance with the realms of higher education, and many more readers, whatever their academic background, have enough imagination to enjoy novels set everywhere from 18th century England to the Starship Enterprise.
