A 27-year-old Joppa man was killed Saturday after he was hit by a car after a fall from his bicycle landed him in the middle of the street, Baltimore County police said. Jason David Leonard, 27, whom police found lying on Right Wing Drive in Essex at around 3:34 a.m., was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said in a release that an intitial investigation found that Leonard was sitting in the middle of Right Wing Drive after falling from his bicycle, when an Oldsmobile Cutlass traveling north struck him. The Cutlass was driven by 25-year-old Brandon Maurice Cook of Essex, who remained at the scene and was taken to an area hospital.

West Columbia Columbia Road: 5600 block, Dorsey's Search. Someone took jewelry and a George Foreman Grill from a residence Oct. 19. The resident believes she may have left a set of keys in her mailbox the day before the objects were taken.

LONG POND, Pa. -- Mark Martin won his third pole of the season as the fastest among 17 drivers who broke the track qualifying record yesterday for the NASCAR Champion Spark Plug 500 stock car race.Martin's lap of 161.996 mph came as radial tires made their debut on the 2 1/2 -mile tri-oval at Pocono International Raceway.So many drivers broke Alan Kulwicki's 3-year-old record of 158.806 mph that two -- Sterling Marlin and Hut Stricklin -- didn't even officially nail down starting spots.Only the first 15 positions were set for the race tomorrow.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- Bill Elliott won a battle of Fords, driving away from Daytona 500 winner Davey Allison in the late stages to earn a seemingly effortless victory yesterday in the Goodwrench 500.Elliott pulled away steadily over the final 100 miles, beating Allison to the finish line by a whopping 12.75 seconds.The victory was Elliott's first for team owner Junior Johnson, whom he joined during the offseason, and his 35th in 350 career starts.Allison provided most of the competition for Elliott as they took turns leading most of the day at the 1.017-mile North Carolina Motor Speedway.

DETROIT -- Saddled with large capital expenditures even as it has racked up losses from operations, General Motors Corp. registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday to raise up to $1 billion from a new issue of preference stock.Added to GM's seven other equity offerings since June 1991, the issue increases to nearly $8 billion the amount raised in equity markets in less than two years. The company said it expected to offer the first shares of the new issue within a few weeks.

Dump truck hits guardrail; driver injuredA Baltimore man was slightly injured yesterday afternoon when his dump truck ran through a guardrail in Ellicott City and rolled down an embankment, dumping a small amount of diesel fuel into a stream, said a spokesman for the county's fire and rescue services.Anthony Ballard, 40, of the 200 block of Bishop Ave. was taken by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries after the 1:06 p.m. accident on Route 29 near Frederick and Toll House roads, said Battalion Chief Donald R. Howell, spokesman for the Howard County Fire and Rescue Services.
