Four people, including a baby, were taken from a Baltimore County apartment complex to hospitals Friday afternoon with carbon monoxide poisoning. When firefighters arrived at the Eagles Crest Complex in Fullerton, they found a 20-year-old woman holding an 11-month-old unconscious girl, said Fire Department spokeswoman Elise Armacost. They had made it out of their unit at 7508 Twincrest Court, but crews had to rescue a 44-year-old woman who was unconscious in the apartment, she said.

We shouldn't be surprised the next time a judge like Baltimore County's Thomas J. Bollinger makes some Neanderthal comment about "every man's fantasy" of sex with a helpless woman, or the next time a group like the "Spur Posse," the California high school athletes who competed for points by racking up sexual conquests, hits the headlines. How can it be any different when society is still teaching boys that, when it comes to sex, real men don't have feelings? The case of Laurie Cook, the Northeast High science teacher charged with abusing a 14-year-old male student, was disturbing, not because a jury found her innocent, but because many people thought it wouldn't have been a big deal had she been guilty.

River Watch is as much about location as it is about food. Overlooking Hopkins Creek in Middle River, the restaurant is popular with boaters who tie up at its 110-slip marina to eat steamed crabs and hear live music on the outdoor deck during warm weather or by one of three fireplaces inside when the weather's chilly. For a casual, come-as-you-dock kind of place, River Watch isn't cheap. An 8-ounce cheeseburger with chips and a pickle is $7.50, a cheese steak $8.95 and a crab cake $12.95.

"Salmonberries" is the lesser of the two films with which the Charles begins its separate admissions policy (it plays at 9.30 p.m.; "Jamon, Jamon" at 7.30 p.m.). Directed by Percy Adlon, famous for "Bagdad Cafe" and "Sugar Baby," it's a chilly, ambiguous, lesbian drama which finally warms up and becomes interesting at the halfway point.Set in Alaska and Berlin -- did you ever think you'd see the two of them in the same movie? -- it follows as an angry orphan, Kotzebue (k.d. lang) tries to deal with the sexual attraction she feels for an older woman, a German expatriate named Roswitha, called "Switha" (almost like "Sweeta,")

An interview with Letitia Franklin, a member of Almost Gold book club. Where does the title of your club come from? We had gone to a book signing for Marian Wright Edelman, and there was an older woman in the audience and she referred to herself as "almost gold." And she said that a lot of the books that were coming out at that particular time were for the young woman, and she was maybe 60 or 65. We were ages 22 to 62, so we represented all different age groups. What book are members reading this month?
