Signs of motherhood:She arrives for an interview with her 2 1/2 -year-old son's lunch splattered across her black shorts. She grows distracted when a stranger's child throws a tantrum nearby. She meticulously tidies up the table after lunch, carrying not just her own, but others' dirty cups and plates to a trash can.No doubt about it, Bess Armstrong -- the Baltimore-born actress now starring in the ABC sitcom "Married People" -- takes her role as a mother very seriously.Sitting in the courtyard of Cross Keys with her movie producer-husband John Fiedler, she has come home for a family christening and excitedly describes the anarchy in her parents' Ruxton house as she prepared to leave:"My son was doing a 51-piece puzzle on the floor of the kitchen.

Three years ago, two Harford County couples made a decision that would change their families forever. Feeling the urge to help others in need, they decided to become foster parents. In the United States, there are more than 400,000 foster children. Approximately 6,500 foster kids live in Maryland, out of which 250 call Harford County home. From the outside, foster families look just like other families, but their situation is unique. The call to pick up a child in need of assistance could come at any time and foster parents have to be ready at a moment's notice.

BUCHAREST, Romania -- Dan lives in a tunnel beneath a manhole cover on the edge of Bucharest's Gara de Nord railway station. It's a hellish, stifling and dirty space where warm pipes hiss and rats scuttle by. The stench is overwhelming. He shares the space with three other ragged boys, all in their mid-teens. They have spread torn cardboard boxes on the floor. They are grateful to have this warm place for the coming winter. In other tunnels, children have even managed to rig up electricity for makeshift lights.

Windows line the back of Jeanne Mandel's sprawling brick home on a hill outside Annapolis, affording soothing views of Mill Creek below. But Jeanne trains her gaze on her husband as he moves around the sunroom, waiting for him to look back with those dark, soulful eyes that can see into her heart. The longtime home of James and Patricia Rouse on the banks of Wilde Lake in Columbia, where the world-known affordable housing advocates danced together to tunes from a stereo next to their living room fireplace, is up for sale. It is the home's first time on the market since the newlyweds purchased it for $95,000 more than 38 years ago. "They would put music on in here and dance. They had this incredible record collection," said Maria Gamper, Patricia Rouse's daughter, as she showed off the modern living area that her mother and stepfather shared for more than two decades.

Once the domain of New Agers and suburban moms, yoga has become firmly planted in Baltimore's inner city, and now researchers believe the ancient practice may help elementary school students cope with the stress of growing up in impoverished, violent neighborhoods. Researchers and lay people alike think yoga may help adults reduce stress. The popularity of the practice has surged, and it's used as therapy for cancer patients and battered women, and as a treatment for back pain and depression.

IT WILL probably take another 20 years of our being exposed to Joan Crawford's film career (much of it very good!) before the trauma inflicted on her reputation by the book Mommie Dearest fades a bit. Mommie was Christina Crawford's vengeful recounting of Joan's less-than-stellar parenting skills as an adoptive mother of four. Christina, and her equally critical brother, Christopher, ran away, misbehaved, acted out and ended up cut out of Crawford's will, "for reasons best known to them," as the star put it. But there were two other children, Cathy and Cindy.
