Medical group president joins magazine's staffDr. Scott Rifkin, a practicing internist and co-founder and president of Baltimore Medical Group, has joined the editorial advisory board of Physician's Practice Digest.Baltimore Medical Group is a primary care, physician-owned medical group with offices in Baltimore City and Baltimore, Harford and Anne Arundel counties.Dr. Rifkin is also chairman of Doctors Health System, which provides management services, information systems and managed care contracting services for primary care physician groups.

LOS ANGELES -- Gov. William Donald Schaefer met here yesterday with 20 leaders in the entertainment industry to encourage them to use Maryland for their future film productions.The meeting represented the last leg of Mr. Schaefer's four-day trip to Southern California, where he promoted Maryland's business climate to representatives of the auto and commercial aircraft industries. The governor also received an award from the American Public Transit Association for work leading to the development of Baltimore's subway and light-rail systems.

The Baltimore office of Summit Properties, headed by developer David Tufaro, has joined the development team planning to build Eutaw Place, a 59-unit, $6 million apartment complex on the site of the Afro-American newspaper.Summit, developer of the 196-unit Waterloo Place apartment complex in Mount Vernon, is working with Cornelius W. May, head of the May Development Co. in Columbia.Mr. May said last year that he has a contract to buy the Afro-American headquarters at 628 N. Eutaw St. and is seeking state aid to build housing for low- and moderate-income people.

City offices in Baltimore will be closed today in observance of Columbus Day, which falls on a Saturday this year. Trash and recyclable goods will not be collected, but schools will be open. Libraries will be closed for a staff day.Federal, state and most county offices in the metropolitan area will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14.

Fifty tenants and more than 100 employees have been displaced as a result of a six-alarm fire that extensively damaged the Hillendale Square building in the 1000 block of Taylor Ave. in Baltimore County.The fire, believed started by an electrical malfunction in a third-floor office, was discovered at 5:30 a.m. yesterday by a passing cab driver who called the fire department, police said.No civilians were injured, but five firefighters were treated at hospitals for minor injuries, smoke inhalation or heat exhaustion, police said.
