When team officials announced last week that Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs had torn his Achilles tendon, former Ravens offensive lineman Wally Williams understood what Suggs was experiencing. Nearly 15 years ago at almost the same time, Williams tore the Achilles tendon in his right, or plant foot, while backpedaling in off-season drills. He returned in six months to start the final 10 games of the 1997 season. Suggs, 29, is expected to have surgery Tuesday morning.

After a quiet first round of the draft in which they traded their pick at No.29 to the Minnesota Vikings for the 35 th pick (3 rd overall in tonight's second round) and the 98 th overall pick, the Ravens will be on the clock tonight probably at about 7:15 barring another trade. By now, you are probably familiar with the names who could be available to them. You have wide receivers Stephen Hill (Georgia Tech) and Rueben Randle (LSU), guard Cordy Glenn (Georgia)

Update 9:52 p.m.: Here are a few quotes from The Castle on the Ravens' first two draft picks tonight. Here are a few highlights from tonight's news conference with Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta, general manager Ozzie Newsome and coach John Harbaugh. Newsome's overall thoughts: "Coming into today, you talk about the two guys that we got, they both were seniors so they bring a level of maturity to the locker room already. They are guys who made their way through two pretty good programs.

Confidence in the health and form of Billy Cundiff, the Ravens announced today that they have released veteran kicker Shayne Graham. Graham, who was signed by the Ravens on Dec. 21 with Cundiff dealing with a left calf injury, was 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts in a 20-14 victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 15, converting from 48 and 43 yards out along with making both of his extra points. However, the Ravens opted to go with Cundiff in Sunday's regular-season closing 24-16 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Pro Bowl selection last year made his one field-goal attempt from 42 yards.

Offensive tackle R.J. Dill -- whose 33 career starts topped the team -- said Monday he is leaving Maryland and intends to play elsewhere next season. Dill becomes the third player with remaining eligibility to confirm they are leaving since the season ended. The others were running back D.J. Adams and defensive lineman David Mackall. Dill said in a telephone interview that he didn't want to discuss the reasons for his departure. "I don't want to play a game of 'He said, she said,' " the player said.

Andrew Gonnella arrived at Maryland in 2007 as a walk-on in a world of scholarship players. His college football career had been a calculated risk. When the offensive guard was in high school, his father, Alfonso — a swimming-pool supply vendor from Orange County, N.Y. — couldn't bring himself to tell his son that the family couldn't afford to send him to Maryland. The elder Gonnella contemplated Andrew's life — how the boy endured the death of his mother from complications of juvenile diabetes when he was 4. "I pretty much mortgaged the house" to pay Maryland's tuition and fees, Alfonso said in 2009.

Forrest Blue, a quick, powerful center who made the Pro Bowl for the San Francisco 49ers from 1971 to 1974 and finished his career with the Baltimore Colts from 1975 to 1978, died Saturday at an assisted-living center in Carmichael, Calif. He was 66. A first-round draft pick out of Auburn in 1968, Blue was a 49ers mainstay for seven seasons and was a first-team All-Pro in 1971 and 1972. "You can't get around him," former San Diego Chargers defensive tackle Ron East once said.

A manager at a College Park bar and restaurant says Maryland football player Justin Lewis punched him in the face after accusing him of "looking at his girl," according to a charging document obtained Wednesday from a Prince George's County District Court. Lewis, 21, an offensive lineman who started 12 of 13 games last season, responded to a warrant this week charging him with second-degree assault, according to university officials. Boys' Latin's Greg Pyke is a quiet giant. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound two-sport star looks down when answering questions — he's not embarrassed, just shy. Maybe he doesn't like talking about himself. Maybe it's because he's young. "What people fail to realize this is still a 17-year-old kid, but he is in a man's body," Lakers lacrosse coach Bob Shriver says. As reserved as he is — Pyke won't even reveal his favorite kind of music — Pyke has made some noise with his athletic prowess.
