TAMPA, Fla. - Who says dealing with ticket requests and media masses during Super Bowl week gets old? Not Harry Swayne. "Definitely not old," the Ravens' right offensive tackle said of returning to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in his 14-year career. "I could come back every year." No Raven has been so fortunate, but Swayne, who will turn 36 on Feb. 2, represents the team's elder statesman in Super Bowl experience. (Tight end Shannon Sharpe is in his third.) Thus far, Swayne is 2-for-3 in the Super Bowl, winning the championship with the 1997 and 1998 Denver Broncos and losing with the 1994 San Diego Chargers.

Navy's football coaching staff underwent a shake-up yesterday less than 48 hours after the team ended its season with a 30-28 victory over archrival Army in Baltimore. In the wake of a 1-10 record, offensive coordinator Mike Vaught, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Gene McKeehan, and secondary coach Charles McMillian were fired; defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter was demoted to a lesser position with the defense. Head coach Charlie Weatherbie - who has served four years of a 10-year contract signed after the team's 1996 bowl season - remains in charge.

The lack of a head coach doesn't mean there isn't work to be done for the benefit of Maryland football. Recruits still need to be called, current players reassured and events attended. None of that disappeared when Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow fired Ron Vanderlinden and most of his staff earlier this week. Sure, there are differences. It means the tasks fall to about five people instead of being spread among 20. It means that the work at the Gossett Team House gets done in a sober atmosphere - "the initial feeling is like being at a funeral," football operations director Tom Deahn said - instead of an upbeat one. And even for those who remain, there's a feeling of uncertainty rather than security.

Ravens coach Brian Billick expects to have his entire staff in place by Wednesday, but two former Baltimore assistants he had hoped to retain are going to Carolina.Billick said defensive line coach Jacob Burney and strength coach Jerry Simmons, each of whom had worked for the Ravens since the team moved here from Cleveland in 1996, have taken jobs with the Panthers under coach George Seifert. The Ravens made a concerted effort to re-sign Burney, considered one of the best defensive line coaches in the NFL. The team is believed to have offered to pay Burney $250,000 a year, an unusually high salary for a position coach.
