It's been four games since Jim Caldwell replaced Cam Cameron as the team's offensive coordinator. One might think that Caldwell is feeling comfortable with his role, but he disagreed Thursday with the notion that he is “settled in.” “I don't think we ever really feel comfortable and settled in,” he said. “But I'm a bit more familiar with some things. But it's a real challenge, calling plays and adjusting. But I've got a lot of help with assistant coaches that are on the staff.

Navy's football coaching staff underwent a shake-up yesterday less than 48 hours after the team ended its season with a 30-28 victory over archrival Army in Baltimore. In the wake of a 1-10 record, offensive coordinator Mike Vaught, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Gene McKeehan, and secondary coach Charles McMillian were fired; defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter was demoted to a lesser position with the defense. Head coach Charlie Weatherbie - who has served four years of a 10-year contract signed after the team's 1996 bowl season - remains in charge.

If there is even the slightest bit of worry about the play of his unit, Ravens offensive line coach Chris Foerster isn't letting on. Win, lose or draw, Foerster's stone-faced analysis - for those looking for specifics but are not coaches - will remain the same. "It's hard for me to go into details and say, `Such and such played well,'" Foerster said. "We're part of the offense. The offense needs to score more points, so we have to look and see what our job could be to do that better. We'll continue to work hard, get our fundamentals to get our guys working together."

TAMPA, Fla. - Who says dealing with ticket requests and media masses during Super Bowl week gets old? Not Harry Swayne. "Definitely not old," the Ravens' right offensive tackle said of returning to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in his 14-year career. "I could come back every year." No Raven has been so fortunate, but Swayne, who will turn 36 on Feb. 2, represents the team's elder statesman in Super Bowl experience. (Tight end Shannon Sharpe is in his third.) Thus far, Swayne is 2-for-3 in the Super Bowl, winning the championship with the 1997 and 1998 Denver Broncos and losing with the 1994 San Diego Chargers.

Ravens coach Brian Billick announced today that the team has hired Tony Nathan as running backs coach and Greg Roman as an assistant offensive line coach. "I am extremely pleased that we were able to bring in Tony Nathan and Greg Roman," Billick said. "Without question, these two men provide us a tremendous amount of experience, and they will enhance our coaching staff immensely. This is a great step for us, and both coaches will assist in our offense's progression." Nathan, who has 14 years of NFL coaching experience, spent the last three years as the running backs coach for Florida International University.

The lack of a head coach doesn't mean there isn't work to be done for the benefit of Maryland football. Recruits still need to be called, current players reassured and events attended. None of that disappeared when Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow fired Ron Vanderlinden and most of his staff earlier this week. Sure, there are differences. It means the tasks fall to about five people instead of being spread among 20. It means that the work at the Gossett Team House gets done in a sober atmosphere - "the initial feeling is like being at a funeral," football operations director Tom Deahn said - instead of an upbeat one. And even for those who remain, there's a feeling of uncertainty rather than security.

Since firing offensive coordinator Cam Cameron in early December, the Ravens have entrusted Jim Caldwell with running the offense. Having reached the Super Bowl behind an offense clicking with Caldwell at the controls, his status as offensive coordinator has been extended at least through next season. Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced Monday that the former Indianapolis Colts head coach and quarterbacks coach has agreed to remain as offensive coordinator going forward. "He's really a solid football coach, first of all," Harbaugh said.
