I've just read, with sadness, all the names of those who died in the wars of Iraq and Afghanistan from Maryland ("In memoriam," May 26). Very sad. I could not help from thinking the whole time, why were they there in the first place? Did they know why they were there? The picture of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on the front of the Maryland Business section makes her look so very, very sad. Come on, the piece is about the city pensions ( "City pension change OK'd ," May 6). The mayor has a very comely smile. I am curious to learn why The Sun rarely shows that in the photos of her it uses. Randall Miller, Ocean View, Del. - To respond to this letter, send an email to talkback@baltimoresun.com . Your front-page story on Nelson Mandela's burial could easily have read "World hero laid to rest" ("S. Africa's hero laid to rest," Dec. 16). Madiba, as he was known by many throughout the African continent, was a world figure. His smile will live on as over time his philosophy of forgiveness and reconciliation changes things. There's a reason foreign students do so much better on standardized test than Americans ( "America the mediocre," Dec. 3). I was listening to a story on the BBC the other day that said one reason South Korea is fifth overall in reading, math and science is that Korean students on average go to school 16 hours a day. Many log 18 hours. They can do this because there is a booming business in private, after-hours schools. Your front-page story on Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler's pressing his drivers to speed through traffic was a real winner ( "Gansler responds to claims he ordered troopers to drive in unsafe manner," Oct. 13). If I still lived in my home state I would need that information before making up my mind whether to vote for him. If all the people in Maryland who drive over the speed limit voted for him he would win hands down. What a laugh. Randall Miller, Ocean View, Del.

William Lloyd Adams is a Baltimore "icon," and his passing is definitely the end of an era ("Former numbers runner became venture capitalist," June 29). I was born and raised in Baltimore, and for my 75 years Mr. Adams has been a force in not only the black community, but in the Baltimore community. The Sun's own Antero Pietila, in his book "Not in My Neighborhood," illuminates this as he writes about another Baltimore original, former state treasurer and civic leader John A. Luetkemeyer.
