OCEAN CITY -- The Route 90 bridge over Assawoman Bay was temporarily closed yesterday evening after a crane being used for repairs collapsed onto the span, authorities said. No injuries were reported. Steven Price, a spokesman for the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Department, said traffic into and out of the resort city had been reduced to one lane while workers were using the crane to repair piers and pilings under the span just west of Ocean City near 62nd Street. About 5:20 p.m., the crane's boom collapsed, halting traffic and closing the bridge for several hours, Price said.

He had retired after 31 years as community supervisor from Baltimore County recreation and Parks Division and was a board member of Baltimore County Credit Union. He was also a Physical Education Teacher at John Paul Regional School. John is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Sherry; two sons, Shane R. (Wendy) and Ryan J. (Renee); 2 grandchildren; Meghan E. and Logan J. Family will receive friends at Burbage Funeral Home, 108 William Street, Berlin, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Luke Catholic Church, Ocean City, on Thursday 11 A.M. Interment in Gardens of the Pines Cemetery, Ocean Pines.

JAMES M. GROVES, 82 of Dundalk, MD/Ocean Pines, MD died February 28, 2006 at his home in Ocean Pines. Mr. Groves was a World War II and Korean War Veteran and retired from the U.S. Army as a Chief Warrant Officer after 42 years of service. Mr. Groves served in the United States Army Air Force and the United Air Force for 23 years and the United States Army for an additional 19 years. He was a life member of Patapsco Masonic Lodge 183, a life member of American Legion Post 38 and a life member of the Reserve Officers Association.

James "Jim" Henry Thomas, a Westinghouse Electric Corp. employee for 30 years who was active in the Order of the Sons of Italy, died in his sleep Wednesday at his Ocean Pines home. He was 77 and had colon cancer. Born in Baltimore, he was the fifth child of Carl and Caroline Thomas, who ran Thomas' Bakery on Pratt Street. He grew up in Highlandtown and graduated from Patterson High School in the mid-1940s. Mr. Thomas reached the rank of lance corporal in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He later earned an associate's degree in business and computer programming at Catonsville Community College.

Franke (Barbara) of Glen Arm, MD, Gail Franke Smith (Len) of Ocean Pines and Janice R. Franke of Columbus, OH, grandfather of seven, uncle of several nieces and nephews. Richard P. Franke, a retired mechanical engineer and business owner who was a leader in the Engineering Society of Baltimore, died of complications related to diabetes and cancer Tuesday at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. The former Riderwood resident was 80. Born in Fort Wayne, Ind., he moved with his family to Baltimore in 1939 and graduated from Polytechnic Institute in 1943. After serving in the Army Air Forces during World War II, he earned a mechanical engineering degree from the Johns Hopkins University.

JASON DAVID HURD, age 31, died Wednesday, December 7, 2005. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of Melanie Carol Rhodes and her husband Allen Rhodes of Ocean Pines , and David Clark Hurd of Baltimore. He is survived by his brother Jeremy Hurd and his wife Rachelle of Ocean View, DE and stepbrother Bo Rhodes and his wife Karyl of Kill Devil Hills, NC. Also surviving is his maternal grandmother Mrs. Stephen King and paternal grandmother Jean Hurd, both of Baltimore. Jason had been a singer with the Len Gray Orchestra and at the Las Vegas Imperial Palace.

Baltimore: Federal court Man gets 10 years in firearm case A 49-year-old Baltimore man was sentenced in federal court yesterday to 10 years in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. Edwin Tucker pleaded guilty to the charges that stemmed from a June 2002 search by agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Explosives. The agents found the drug Xanax, money, a 12-gauge shotgun and a box of .22-caliber ammunition in his home, according to prosecutors.
