Julia McCready is a candidate for the CA Board of Directors representing Oakland Mills. What I really like about Julia is that she understands that for Columbia to remain vibrant it must be dynamic and continue to progress. She believes that this doesn't have to be a scary process; progress can be achieved incrementally, a project at a time, in an open, thoughtful, and civilized manner. Columbia should not be a static memorial to its founding father. I want leaders who won't let that happen.

As the former chair of the Oakland Mills Village Board, I have had the pleasure of working with both candidates for Columbia Council. I am supporting Julia McCready. When Julia served on the board, she listened to all voices regarding items before the board, and with her great grasp of the issues, asked the tough questions to determine what is best for Oakland Mills and Columbia. She has proven to me to be a positive, forward thinker that I trust will do the job that she is elected to do. Her opponent says in a mailing that he "Looks out for the interest of all residents," but after working with him, I know that he fights for the agenda of a narrow constituency.

Tavi Thomas ended the Oakland Mills dream of a perfect season Thursday night. Thomas drilled a 3-pointer with nine seconds left that gave visiting Calvert a come-from-behind 69-67 victory over No. 6 Oakland Mills in the Class 2A South region championship. Oakland Mills entered the game as the only unbeaten public school team left in the state - for boys - and the Scorpions finished with a 24-1 record. Oakland Mills was trying to make the state final four for the first time in 12 years, and a state championship would have meant the Scorpions did it with a perfect record.

No. 6 Oakland Mills went ahead by as many as 16 points in the second half before having to hold off a late comeback attempt by Largo. The Scorpions finally put the visiting Lions away, 64-58, in a Class 2A South regional boys basketball semifinal game Tuesday night. Junior guard Deshawn Willis scored a team-high 17 points, including an alley-oop dunk off an assist from Nekhi Bradley that thrilled a packed gym. Loyola-bound forward Lavon Long added 16 points and 11 rebounds for Oakland Mills (24-0)

The eternal truths found in Shakespeare help explain why theater companies often like to give his plays a contemporary setting. Audiences at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills will take it in stride that the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company has taken a comedy written in the 1590s, "The Two Gentlemen of Verona," and moved it up in time to 1991. Although this sparely mounted production has a set that only amounts to a simple wood platform on the theater floor, the contemporary clothing on the characters makes them pass for circa 1990s young American adults; and there are enough guitar-strumming musical interludes to underscore the Gen X mood.
