In the top of the seventh inning at No. 6 Oakland Mills on Wednesday afternoon, Marriotts Ridge took a 3-2 lead on an RBI ground ball by leadoff man Jake Bender that sent home Matt Marinelli who had led off the inning with a single. At the time, Connor Delaney - the Mustangs' No. 5 hitter - thought the run would be enough for ace Eric Brown and the solid Marriotts Ridge defense. "I definitely trusted our defense ... but I knew any more runs we would get would be insurance runs," Delaney said.

No. 3 Reservoir slowly pulled away to win its first state title (Class 3A), and No. 5 Carver quickly ran away from its Class 1A opponents to win an outdoor title for the first time.

After graduating its top three scorers from a team that posted its second-worst record (6-5-2) in 17 years, the Oakland Mills boys soccer team wasn't expected to make much noise this season.Don't look now, but the Scorpions are 3-0 after yesterday's 2-1 victory over No. 14 Gilman at Oakland Mills. The Greyhounds (3-2) thought that this Oakland Mills team wouldn't resemble those that have won seven state championships, and Gilman was hoping that a victory over a Columbia school with a proud soccer history might boost respect for its soccer program.
