Carol Nutt didn't want to put any added pressure on her defending state, district and region champion golf team at Arundel High. Anyone who has ever three-putted knows the sport provides enough stress on its own.Nevertheless, Nutt couldn't help but challenge her team into setting the lofty goal of winning a state championship."

Arundel and Quince Orchard gymnasts learned last night that every point -- even fractions of points -- can mean the difference between being a champion or an also-ran.The teams went head-to-head last night at Annapolis High School in the Maryland State/Regional gymnastics meet and Arundel walked away with the overall team title by just .025 of a point. For Wildcats coach Carol Nutt, it was her second gymnastics title, with the first coming in 1986. Nutt said the narrow victory was something she warns her team about repeatedly.

The shrinking sport of high school gymnastics in Maryland had a moment of glory last night. No longer is there a state championship meet, now that Howard County and Montgomery County have dropped gymnastics as a varsity sport. Arundel won the final state title last year, edging Quince Orchard of Montgomery County. This season, six teams in Anne Arundel County -- Annapolis, Arundel, Broadneck, Chesapeake, Old Mill and Severna Park -- have carried the state's varsity gymnastics banner alone. And carry it defending champion Arundel did, winning the title with 130.7 points in the girls season-ending county championship meet at Chesapeake.

Paul Wills isn't superstitious. The Arundel High junior doesn't put on his golf spikes in any particular order and his warm-up routine before a match can vary more than the colors in a pair of plaid golf pants."

Talent, experience and depth.Rival coaches aren't certain which trait is most prominent in the Severna Park girls gymnastics program, but most agree on one point: the Falcons enjoy a healthy advantage in all three.Once again, the Falcons have their sights set on winning the county title this afternoon at Old Mill. They were victorious last year en route to the region-state championship and are strong favorites to repeat. The top two finishers in the seven-team field advance to Thursday's region-state meet at Glenelg in Howard County.

Arkansas, an unranked team that rose to No. 17 with a 27-10 win over then-No. 2 Auburn last weekend, seems to be taking its cues from the 2002 and 2003 teams rather than the past two. By not looking ahead, the Razorbacks (4-1) have lifted themselves from a season-opening shellacking from Southern California to their stunning triumph over the Tigers. That's something the team hopes to continue, not only in its quest for a title in the Southeastern Conference, but also in today's game against apparently overmatched Division I-AA Southeast Missouri State.

Scott McNutt's first six months as a call-taker in the county emergency operations center have been busier than he could have imagined. The 21-year-old Bel Air resident has assisted in the births of two babies (both in the same week), consoled a man who had attempted suicide, and dispatched police and firefighters to emergencies ranging from fires and car accidents to water main breaks and gas leaks. None of that includes being injured in a fire last month in his other job. McNutt works from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., answering 911 calls at the EOC. By day, he switches roles and responds to calls as a volunteer firefighter for the Bel Air company.

With three of its four golfers back from last year's team that won the county and district tournaments, Arundel's golf team has to be considered the team to beat in Anne Arundel County.Just don't try selling that to Wildcats coach Carol Nutt, because she's not buying it."We have to be aware of Severna Park because they have two really good players," said Nutt, referring to the Falcons' Ryan Thompson and Andy Alcorn. "We have to respect our opponents. Golf is a strange game and anything can happen."

Just mention the word golf to any of the county's nine varsity golf coaches and see if they can complete a thought without making reference to Arundel High School. They can't. And they shouldn't.The Wildcats are loaded, and with Gary Carpenter at the "fore"-front, Arundel is poised to successfully defend its state, regional and county titles."I would say we should be as strong, or stronger, than last year," said Carol Nutt, last year's Anne Arundel County Sun Golf Coach of the Year. "This is a brand-new position for Arundel High School.
