A Rockville real estate investment trust said yesterday that it has made a major push into the Baltimore-area market, buying the high-profile The Avenue at White Marsh and two nearby retail complexes in a deal valued at $189 million in equity and debt. Federal Realty Investment Trust purchased The Avenue, White Marsh Plaza and the Shoppes at Nottingham Square from Towson-based Nottingham Properties Inc., which recently sold its office properties to another local REIT. Nottingham executives did not return calls seeking comment.

Maryland State Police are searching for an escaped four-time murderer who was spotted Friday in a wooded area near Cecil County's border with Pennsylvania.Norman Johnston, 48, escaped Monday from a central Pennsylvania prison where he was serving a life sentence for the 1980 murders of four Pennsylvania teen-agers. The film "At Close Range," starring Sean Penn, was based on the killings.On Friday evening, Johnston was spotted talking on a pay phone in Nottingham, Pa., but he eluded authorities by fleeing into the 600-acre Nottingham Park, two miles from the Maryland border.

The Mount Airy Planning and Zoning Commission cleared the way last night for a private swimming pool expected to open this summer.After a month's delay and considerable discussion about parking, the commission approved plans for the Nottingham Swim Club in Fields of Nottingham, a development east of town. The vote was 4-to-1, with member Wendy Peters abstaining.The club, with a swimming pool, children's wading pool and activity pool with fountains and waterfalls, is part of the 400-home Nottingham development, though it will accept members who live outside the neighborhood.

On the edge of Sherwood Forest, down the river from Robin Hood Hill, past Nottingham Road in the picturesque neighborhood of Friar Tuck, an old man fishes on a pond thestate paid $1 million to save.Life is good here, in this oasis of undeveloped woodlands where the smattering of summer cottages are painted green so as not to clash with the trees.In Anne Arundel County -- where housing developments rapidly are replacing woodlands -- environmental groups fought hard to save 700 acres of forest and waterfront nicknamed the "Green Cathedral" because it is one of the last large, untouched tracts along the Severn River.

R. McLean Campbell, who as president and chief executive officer of Nottingham Properties was instrumental in developing White Marsh, died Thursday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center of a stroke. He was 73.A former longtime Towson resident, he had resided at the Blakehurst Life Care Community since 1993.Mr. Campbell was born and raised in Towson. He was named for his maternal great-grandparents, Wilmer and Virginia McLean, the couple whose front parlor at Appomattox Court House, Va., was the site of Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, to end the Civil War.A 1942 Gilman School graduate, he earned a bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1948.

Victoria Nottingham, 64, USF&G clerk, homemakerVictoria Nottingham, a clerk at USF&G, died Sunday of lung failure at Sinai Hospital. The Northwest Baltimore resident was 64.A native of Eastville, Va., the former Victoria Jordan married Benjamin T. Nottingham in the early 1960s and moved to Baltimore soon afterward.She was a homemaker before she joined USF&G in 1972, first at its downtown location and later in Mount Washington. She retired from full-time work in 1994 and was working there part time at her death.

Robinson Kendall Nottingham, the former executive vice president of global insurance giant American International Group Inc. and a trustee of the Johns Hopkins University, died May 20 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, several days after suffering a stroke. He was 70. Mr. Nottingham's 38-year career at AIG was hardly the stuff of gray-suited stereotype, offering him adventures in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War era and close calls in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. He climbed the corporate ladder in New York but remained faithful to the Baltimore institutions that nurtured his intellectual development and became was a major donor to Hopkins' School of Advanced International Studies.

Nottingham Properties Inc., the family-owned developer that over four decades transformed White Marsh from sand and gravel pits into a thriving town center, has agreed to be acquired by Maryland's biggest suburban landlord, Corporate Office Properties Trust. For Columbia-based COPT, which has grown rapidly by building and leasing offices to defense-related tenants, the $362.5 million deal will put it in better position to benefit from the military base restructuring that is expected to shift tens of thousands of jobs to the Interstate 95 corridor around the Aberdeen Proving Ground and Fort Meade.

The stately brick manor has stood on a Harford County hillside since 1791 and has been home to several prominent Maryland families, including that of a former governor whose signature is on the Declaration of Independence. But a developer's site plan refers to the two-story house near Bel Air as an "existing dwelling" that could be razed to make way for a luxury townhouse complex for senior citizens. And as county planners consider the proposal, preservationists have taken up the cause of trying to save the home.
