It usually isn't big news when a Big Ten team moves into the Associated Press poll. It is when that team is Northwestern. The Wildcats moved into the poll Monday at No. 25, their first appearance since January 1969, when it was still a Top 20. With Kansas again a runaway No. 1, as it has been since the preseason poll, the top eight remained the same for the third straight week. Northwestern (10-1) has won nine straight since a loss to Butler. The Wildcats, the only team from a BCS conference never to play in the NCAA tournament, were ranked for three weeks in 1968-69.

The Engineers got a six-goal, two-assist performance from junior Raamah Harcum and goalie Michael Brown turned back 14 shots as the Engineers came away with a 17-3 win over Northwestern for their second title in three years.

The No. 2 Northwestern women's lacrosse team has a habit of handing out beat-downs, not taking them. But No. 4 host Florida used a fast-starting offense to build a big lead and win, 22-4, Saturday. The stakes could not be much higher for Saturday's noon showdown between the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team and No. 2 North Carolina in College Park. Not only is the No. 1 ranking at stake, but the winner likely will be the top seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, which begins April 25. While the Tar Heels already have the home-field advantage for that - the tournament is in Chapel Hill - the top seed certainly brings a psychological edge. The Terps head into Saturday with the No. 2 scoring offense in Division I, averaging 16 goals per game.

Navy's women's lacrosse team had never come closer than within seven points of a Top 20 opponent, so they turned a few heads Monday when they came within 15-12 of No. 4 and defending national champion Northwestern. Perhaps what shows how far the No. 15 Midshipmen have come was their reaction to losing that game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. They weren't happy about coming so close. The game was tied seven times, lastly at 10 with 17 minutes to go, so the Midshipmen thought they could have won. “We were in a position to make a statement and I think it's a matter of getting over that hump,” said Navy coach Cindy Timchal, whose team had fallen to then-No.

You could just tell immediately that Dez Wells was ready to play at Northwestern on Tuesday night. The Maryland sophomore guard had a certain confidence, an energy. He converted the Terps' first field goal on a feed from Alex Len. Then he hit the team's second shot as well in Maryland's 77-57 win. Later, Wells was heckled by some fans behind the basket. If anything, he only played with more energy after that. This is clearly a player who is going to enjoy playing in ACC road venues.

A late 5-0 run broke a 10-10 tie and vaulted the No. 4 Northwestern women's lacrosse team past No. 15 Navy, 15-12, on Monday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. "I'm proud of the effort Navy had today and it was a reflection of how hard we have been working," Mids coach Cindy Timchal said. "We played them tough. We were trading goals and then they got that little bit of a gap on us offensively. They are a very good team though. There is a reason why they have won seven of the last eight national championships.
