Century's Jenny Steadman set a Carroll County record for career goals last night in leading the No. 5 Knights to a 23-1 victory over Havre de Grace in the state Class 2A-1A semifinals at South Carroll High. The All-Metro midfielder scored five goals to boost her career total to 252, breaking the previous mark of 249 set by Liberty's Becky Trumbo in 2002. Steadman and Katie Schwarzmann had eight points each last night as the defending champion Knights (16-2) scored 11 goals in the first 11 minutes.

The Fallston girls team used its depth to capture a third consecutive Harford County swimming championship last night at Magnolia Middle School. The Cougars won five of the meet's 11 events. In addition, Fallston finished in the top three in nine events to compile 294 points, beating out North Harford (249). "The girls just did an awesome job again," said Sheri Huppenthal, who coaches Fallston with Jeff DeHart. "From the kids that placed first to the kids that placed 12th, we needed them all."

Broadneck's premier distance runner, Matthew Centrowitz, and North Harford's three-sport standout, Corey Donohoe, were named The Sun's male and female Athletes of the Year at the 41st awards ceremony held at M&T Bank Stadium yesterday. Donohoe, who had no idea she would win, was introduced first and thanked her parents and coaches. The North Carolina-bound lacrosse player is featured in today's All-Metro section as the girls lacrosse Player of the Year. The first girl from Harford County to receive the award in 29 years (Bel Air's Karen Stout was the first girl Athlete of the Year in 1978)

With almost two minutes left and the game tied in last night's overtime girls lacrosse game at North Harford, Hawks senior Corey Donohoe got a yellow card and had to sit for three minutes. Fortunately for Donohoe, there was time to return. The game went into double overtime and Donohoe scored the game-winner on a free-position goal with four seconds left to lead the No. 9 Hawks to an 11-10 victory over Harford County rival Fallston. Donohoe also scored the tying goal at the buzzer in regulation, making it 9-9, but a dangerous check brought her the yellow card and the three-minute break.

5 Extra points that Joppatowne kicker Matt Wood converted in the Mariners' 35-14 victory over Snow Hill in a Class 1A regional final on Nov. 23. 21 The ranking that the John Carroll boys basketball team received in ESPN's preseason national top 25 poll. 28 Points that the Joppatowne football team scored in the first half in its win over Snow Hill. The Mariners won and advanced to this past Friday's state semifinal against Allegany. 117 Yards that North Harford's Ben Weimer gained on seven catches in a 26-6 loss to Wilde Lake in a Class 3A regional final on Nov. 23. 432 Yards that North Harford's defense allowed against a speedy Wilde Lake team, which rolled to a 26-6 victory.

Most of the lights had been turned out in the end zone near the parking lot in the minutes after North Harford lost to visiting Wilde Lake in the Class 3A East regional final Nov. 23. But there still were emotional scenes being played out near the goal posts. North Harford football coach Ken Brinkman stood in the back part of the end zone and made a point of quietly saying farewell to several of the Hawks after they had lost, 26-6. A number of players came up to Brinkman and gave him a hug and thanked the coach for a memorable season or career.

North Harford point guard Corey Donohoe is busy on and off the court. She belongs to eight clubs, including Best Buddies, an organization in which able-bodied people work with disabled children, and an alcohol-prevention club called STARS. The 5-foot-8 senior averages 24.8 points, which puts her in a three-way battle for the county scoring title. Less than two weeks ago, she had 38 points in a victory over Edgewood, scoring 20 in the first quarter. Donohoe also averages 4.5 steals and four assists.

Joe D. Evans, a retired Harford County high school principal and model train collector, died of cancer April 10 at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Street resident was 70. Mr. Evans was born in Carbondale, Pa., and moved with his family to Baltimore in 1943. They later moved to Jarrettsville, and in 1955, he graduated from North Harford High. After graduating from what is now Salisbury University in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in education, he began teaching science and mathematics at Edgewood High School.

Offensive Player Dan Griffin North Harford In his third year as starting quarterback, the 6-foot, 180-pound senior smoothly ran the team's triple-option offense and proved to be effective in several ways. Griffin ran for 840 yards on 132 carries and scored 23 touchdowns to help North Harford (10-2) win its first state playoff game in school history. Griffin made himself more versatile by completing 70 of 119 passes for 1,121 yards and three touchdowns. He finished with 1,961 yards of total offense.

Brandon Bayer, North Harford, football The junior running back carried the ball 31 times for 220 yards and two touchdowns as the Hawks (3-1) pulled out a 38-30 win over Aberdeen on Friday. Bayer also had five tackles at strong safety and ran for a pair of two-point conversions. In four games, he has scored 52 points, rushing 76 times for 493 yards and eight touchdowns. Bayer, who has a 3.85 grade-point average, also plays basketball and baseball for North Harford. POP MUSIC The Roots Check out the annual Johns Hopkins Spring Fair, featuring a beer garden, food vendors, craft stands, interactive literacy events for kids, a carnival and music events. Harford County athletes must now take one more step before playing in any games. A new policy will require athletes to provide the school with a recent utility bill to help show proof of residence. "We've had residency issues in the past, and we just want to make sure that we don't put a school in a situation that compromises everything they've worked towards in sports," said Ken Zorbach, the county's supervisor of athletics. The policy was put into place about a week before the winter season began.

In an effort to provide tax relief to homeowners, Republican Sen. Barry Glassman has filed a bill to freeze at current levels those properties due for re-assessment in 2009 and to recalculate assessments completed in the last five years so that those reflect today's market values. The proposal would mean the properties along the Route 40 corridor would remain at the assessment level established three years ago rather than go through the process, scheduled to begin in January and likely to show an increase in value.

Jack Shagena bought his first Dave DeRan painting in 1976. Over the years, Shagena, a resident of Bel Air, has added another 60 DeRans to his collection. "He's very talented," Shagena said of DeRan, a 61-year-old self-taught artist who grew up in Pylesville. DeRan has made a living selling watercolor and acrylic paintings of farm scenes, woodland vistas, American Indians, forest streams and animals, including cows, horses, sheep, birds and turtles, in a style often compared to Andrew Wyeth.

Coach Rob Torres was disappointed when his John Carroll girls cross country team finished second in last year's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship run. The Patriots were the defending champions and had two of the area's top runners. But when John Carroll finished second again this year, Torres and the Patriots weren't upset at all. In fact, they were delighted, because John Carroll lost its top three runners from last year but turned in a strong performance at Oregon Ridge Park.

Boys Vollebyall Harford County Championship @ North Harford WHEN: Wednesday, 3 p.m. OUTLOOK: C. Milton Wright comes into the tournament riding high after a perfect regular season. The Mustangs went 14-0 and lost only four sets, none of which came when their first unit was in. They'll also have some revenge on their minds after losing a close match to Fallston in the finals last year. But teams like Havre de Grace, Fallston and others have been strong, and the one-game, 25-point double elimination format can mean some surprises.

WALDORF - South River coach Bruce Bowen said what separates Josh Eure from other golfers is his commitment to the game. Eure spends most of his offseason chipping, putting and driving golf balls to perfect his swing. That practice paid off yesterday at Potomac Ridge in Waldorf as Eure won the boys state title with a two-day score of 147, five strokes better than second-place Jay Dove of La Plata. "Coming back this year, I wanted it more than I ever have before," Eure said. "It was my senior year, and I was one of the favorites coming into it. I really wanted to win this one."

Girls soccer UCBAC Championship No. 2 Fallston vs. Elkton @ North Harford WHEN: : Wednesday, 5 p.m. OUTLOOK: : Fallston has been solid all season, scoring goals and playing tough defense en route to a 10-0 mark midway through this past week. The Cougars beat Aberdeen and Mount Hebron recently and won the UCBAC's Chesapeake Division title. Elkton (7-3) won the Susquehanna Division and will face a big test against Fallston, which won last year's crown.
