...(TC Steve Malone has retired as boys soccer coach at North County High after 27 years in Anne Arundel County, the first 23 at Andover High and the last four at North County.Malone was attending the state soccer coaches' association convention this weekend and could not be reached for comment.His assistant, Dan Krimmelbein, who has been with Malone for 14 years as a coach and also played for him for four years, confirmed Malone's retirement last night."Steve had enough after 27 years and had a special group of kids this year, and felt it would be the time to retire," Krimmelbein said.

North County linebacker/running back Anthony Walker has accepted a full scholarship to Syracuse University, becoming the Knights' first Division I football player in their two-year history.Walker, selected as The Anne Arundel County Sun's 1991 Player of the Year, has given a verbal commitment and said he will officially sign a letter-of-intent Wednesday morning, most likely at North County."I think it's very exciting for Anthony and the school, but more importantly, for his family and the community," said North County Principal William Wentworth.

Kiki Ellis had a royal experience yesterday as top-ranked North County shook off its first-half doze to put away Annapolis, 33-7, in Ferndale. Ellis, proclaimed homecoming king at halftime, then crowned a second-half surge by the Knights by running for 123 yards and a key touchdown.It was North County's 13th straight victory, dating back to last season. The Knights (8-0, 6-0) are one win from the Anne Arundel County Class 4A title and two wins from becoming the county's 11th unbeaten team in 36 years.

North County business and community leaders want to immortalize the attractions of their hometown on the big screen.With the use of avideo camera, the North County Chamber of Commerce hopes to create aportrait of the northern end of the county, stretching from Glen Burnie to Brooklyn Park.It's an area of quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods, old churches andmodern government offices; home to old-fashioned bakeries, fruit markets, shopping centers, restaurants and an international airport.North County is all this and more, says chamber president Lisa Pitt.

North County athletic director Mike Baker announced the hiring of Brad Wilson yesterday as boys basketball coach.Wilson replaces Dick Hart, 53, who is undergoing treatment for a cancerous brain tumor and cannot coach the Knights' first season.Wilson, 30, served as an assistant the past eight years to Meade head basketball coach Butch Young while also serving as head coach of the junior varsity squad. He is currently the head defensive coordinator of the North County football team.Baker said Wilson was chosen from among three applicants because of his "extensive experience working in one of the two best programs in the county."

Within 3 1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter of yesterday's Class 4A state semifinal, Patterson coach Roger Wrenn experienced the gamut of emotions.From the anger of a botched punt to the elation of a fumble recovery and subsequent go-ahead touchdown, to devastation.The last emotion came when Topper Ellis returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown with 2:17 remaining to give the seventh-ranked North County Knights an 18-15 victory over the No. 1 Clippers.The win propelled the Knights (10-2)
