Last year, North County High School in Glen Burnie received $1.7 million in college scholarship offers for graduating seniors, a figure that would draw kudos throughout much of the country but not as much in Anne Arundel County, which is fast becoming known for its students' penchant for garnering financial aid funds that would rival the Maryland Lottery. North County's sum was last among the county's 12 high schools, and less than half that of 11th-place Southern High. The school also finished last in 2009 and had never received more than $2.1 million for scholarships in a single year.

In one classroom, students pore over wires and switches, a complicated array of materials used to produce a working version of a mazelike circuit diagram on the projection screen. In another - actually not a classroom at all, but the woods behind a greenhouse - students poke insects, yell about a deer sighting and shriek as a tick finds its way up an exposed leg. The two very different experiences are part of a summer program for students attending the new science, technology, engineering and math magnet program at North County High School next month.

Students at North County High School learned an important lesson in the kitchen of a Hilton hotel: When preparing 250 dessert plates for a wedding reception, keep it simple. The sophomores and juniors grabbed containers of red, white and blue icing to frame the plates for cheesecake wedges. The teens who used only two colors formed delicate swirls with toothpicks. Those who used all three made more of a smear. "You don't want to be in the kitchen forever," said Steve Kaiser, general manager of the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport Hotel.

Eight Anne Arundel County schools with thousands of students were locked down for several hours yesterday after a man showed up at a high school in women's clothing and asked to see a female student, authorities said. The man, thought by police to be Antonio Moore, 20, of Brooklyn Park, left North County High School in Ferndale after an officer stationed at the school learned that the girl was not expecting a visitor and alerted police. As a precaution, North County and four nearby elementary schools, two middle schools and an early education center - which have a combined enrollment of nearly 5,000 - were locked down, meaning that students and staff were instructed to stay in classrooms behind locked doors.
