News that was once shared over a backyard fence, at a general store or over the telephone is now being emailed to thousands of North County residents. Several Hereford Zone folks have amassed email lists and when something big is happening, at least 2,000 people out here find out. Immediately. I know, because I’m on several of those lists. Just yesterday, I received an email from Cockeysville police precinct captain Marty Lurz, warning about traffic tie-ups because of William Donald Schaefer’s funeral procession.

Fourth-ranked South River gave up two early runs, but came back to score five and defeat No. 5 North County, 5-2, on Friday to win the Class 4A East region baseball title. It is the first region title for South River since 2008. Brody Raimondo went 4-for-4 with a double, while Scott Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a triple to lead South River (18-5). Mitchell also pitched a complete game five-hitter with seven strikeouts. The Seahawks will face Prince George's County's Eleanor Roosevelt, the South Region winner, at 4 p.m.on Tuesday in College Park.

The North Harford boys lacrosse team captured its first Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference championship Monday. The Hawks, aided by a 12-2 scoring advantage over the final three quarters, beat Rising Sun, 17-5, at James R. Harris Stadium in Havre de Grace. "It's been a great year - the balls bounced our way," North Harford coach John Grubb said. On Monday, the bounces led to Max Mullin's first of a game-high five goals. Mullin finished the quarter with three goals, leading North Harford to a 5-3 advantage.

North County wrestler Lorenzo Maddox, competing in the 285-pound weight class, won the Middle Atlantic States Wrestling Association (MAWA) High School Elite Division of the Eastern National Wrestling Championships. He is the first North County wrestler to win the tournament, only the third Maryland high school heavyweight to win the tournament and the fourth Anne Arundel County wrestler to win the tournament in any of the 14 weight classes, according to information released by the school.

The battle for the Anne Arundel County baseball championship will likely come down to the final week of the regular season. On Wednesday, 10th-ranked North County made sure that it stayed in the thick of the race with a 5-1 victory over No. 6 Broadneck. The host Knights, who ran their winning streak to three games, got a complete-game performance from senior pitcher Gregg Hauck and timely hitting to beat the visiting Bruins. In just his second start of the season, Hauck scattered four hits and struck out seven.

Monkton Everett Road , 200 block, between June 29 and June 30. Hood, battery and oil breather stolen from vintage car on property. Manchester Gunpowder Road , 21500 block, between noon and 1 p.m. July 3. Two 9 mm handguns stolen from vehicle. Owner told police he was going out to shoot guns but left them in vehicle with windows down so vehicle could cool off. When he returned, guns were gone.

North County High School's junior varsity cheerleading squad attended the National Cheerleaders Association's Camp earlier this month at UMBC.The camp was attended by 380 cheerleaders from more than 30 squads. North County brought home two "Superior" ribbons, one "Excellent" ribbon, the NCA "Game Day Award," and an NCA "Spirit Stick," which goes to teams that show outstanding sportsmanship, spirit and enthusiasm.Chris Moseley, captain of North County's varsity cheerleading squad, attended the camp with the junior varsity team and was among eight campers chosen as an NCA All-American Cheerleader.

The North County boys basketball team held off No. 14 Broadneck's second-half rally yesterday to earn a 58-54 win. North County (11-6) started strong and looked to be in control of the game, building a 10-point lead by halftime. The Bruins (13-6) fought back in the second half, however, and cut the lead to six points after three periods and later down to three with a minute left in the game. The Knights sealed the win at the free-throw line, where David Ford, who finished with 13 points, went 4-for-4 in the final minute.

Justin Matthew Beaumont, the 25-year-old Glen Burnie man who was charged with trespassing at an Anne Arundel County school — and who police said was later found to have a stash of legal, high-powered weapons at his home — has been ordered onto house arrest with electronic monitoring. On Wednesday, Annapolis District Court Judge Shaem Spencer ordered Beaumont released from the Anne Arundel County Detention Center, according to a spokeswoman for county prosecutors. Terms of his release include supervision, mental health care, taking medications, staying away from all school properties and prohibition from owning guns or being in a home where there are firearms.

The man charged with trespassing at an Anne Arundel County school this month — and who police said had a number of legal, high-powered weapons in his home — has been deemed competent to stand trial, based on a psychiatric evaluation. After a brief District Court hearing Tuesday in Annapolis before Judge Danielle Mosley, Justin Beaumont, 25, of Glen Burnie, was returned to the mental health unit of the Anne Arundel County Detention Center, with a bail review hearing set for Wednesday.

A 25-year-old man arrested for trespassing in North County High School this month - and who was found to have a number of legal, high-powered weapons in his home - has been ordered held without bond. Justin Matthew Beaumont, of Glen Burnie, was held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center after a bond review hearing Wednesday, according to Kristin Fleckenstein, spokeswoman for the Anne Arundel County state's attorney's office. Beaumont was arrested at North County High School on Feb. 4, according to police accounts.

North County High School student Jack Andraka was slated to be a guest of First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday night at the State of the Union address in Washington. Jack Andraka, of Crownsville, was invited to sit in the box with the First Lady and also Dr. Jill Biden during President Barack Obama's address at the U.S. Capitol, according to a release from the White House. In 2012 Andraka, a sophomore at North County, was awarded first place in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for his discovery of a method to detect pancreatic cancer.

The Seton Keough field hockey team is having a year to remember in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference, and one of the primary reasons is the play of goalkeeper Becca Wallace. The senior, who transferred to the school two years ago from North County, has made 76 saves this season and shut out the entire B Conference. She has allowed only five goals out of conference to top-ranked public schools and A Conference teams as the Gators have built a 16-3-2 overall record, including 11-0 in conference.
