Prior to Saturday, No. 10 North Carolina had yet to string together two consecutive wins in 2013 and was just one game above .500 heading into a pivotal road contest against top-ranked and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland. But that didn't prevent the Tar Heels from pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the season as they tagged the Terps with their first loss of the year in a 10-8 victory at Byrd Stadium in College Park. Maryland (6-1) may have been the team with all of the accolades and the momentum, but it also had all of the pressure, according to North Carolina senior attackman Marcus Holman.

Analyst Paul Carcaterra was part of the ESPN team that provided coverage of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore last Saturday. The former Syracuse All-American midfielder, who can be followed on Twitter via @paulcarcaterra, will be part of the crew covering No. 14 Brown at No. 10 North Carolina on Wednesday night and No. 1 Maryland at No. 13 Virginia on Saturday. Carcaterra discussed parity in the sport, the new No. 1 team in some polls, and the team with the most wins in Division I. What was the lasting impression of this past weekend's results?

All is not lost at Maryland. At least that's what the top-ranked Terps are saying after absorbing their first loss of the season via a 10-8 upset by No. 10 North Carolina Saturday at Byrd Stadium in College Park. Maryland's first setback was compounded by questionable shot selection, an exposed defense, and an unusual case of nerves as the Tar Heels built a convincing advantage and then withstood an attempted comeback. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Niko Amato said the loss would give the players an opportunity to do a little soul-searching.

Maryland owns a 39-22 advantage in this series with its Atlantic Coast Conference rival, but North Carolina has won four of the last six meetings. The No. 10 Tar Heels are 4-3 this spring but have followed every win with a loss. They dusted Dartmouth, 13-5, on Monday as senior attackman Marcus Holman (Gilman) registered four goals (including the 100th of his career) and one assist. The top-ranked Terps, who are the only undefeated team left in Division I, are seeking their first 7-0 start since 2004.

And then there were none. No. 1 Maryland's bid for a perfect season ended emphatically against No. 10 North Carolina, 10-8, before an announced 3,053 at Byrd Stadium on Saturday. The Terps , who fell to 6-1 and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, had been the last remaining unbeaten men's lacrosse team in Division I after No. 2 Cornell lost, 9-8, to No. 20 Bucknell last Tuesday. But the Tar Heels (5-3, 1-1) prevented Maryland from its first 7-0 start since 2004. "It's pretty disappointing," Terps senior midfielder Jake Bernhardt said.

Friday's editions included a Q&A with North Carolina senior attackman Marcus Holman, a Baltimore native and Gilman graduate. Due to space constraints, here are some more answers that didn't make the cut: Who is the best teammate you've played with? I would have to say that [senior midfielder] Davey Emala is a great teammate. He's a guy that just likes to take care of business. He comes to work every day. I would also have to say that [sophomore attackman] Joey Sankey - in the two years that I've played with him - is another guy that you can always count on to make the right play and you can always count on him going 100 percent.

A U.S. Marshals task force in North Carolina arrested a Baltimore man Friday in the fatal stabbing of a 31-year-old woman in the Lakeland neighborhood. Along with Winston Salem, N.C., police, task force officers found Michael Gerald Wesley, 34, at a bus stop in Winston Salem through tips and surveillance. When they moved to make an arrest, authorities said he tried to evade capture by hiding his face and ducking into a business. As he was heading for a back door in a business, U.S. Marshals Service officials said, deputy U.S. Marshals detained him without incident.

Jay Carlson may have opened some eyes with his five-goal explosion in top-ranked Maryland's 10-7 victory over Villanova last Saturday. But not those of coach John Tillman. The sophomore attackman, a Cockeysville native and St. Paul's graduate who has replaced senior Billy Gribbin in the starting lineup in the team's last two contests, has scored seven goals in those games. Carlson is tied with senior attackman Kevin Cooper for the team lead in goals with 12 and tied with redshirt senior midfielder Jake Bernhardt for fifth in points with 13. “Jay is a guy that - since the day he got here - has a knack for scoring goals,” Tillman said Tuesday morning during his weekly conference call.

The plaque hangs on the wall of the doctor's office, proof of its worth to Greg Brouse, 1981 grand-prize winner of the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete award. "My kids can't believe I was either a scholar or an athlete," said Brouse, who is now an oncologist in Monroe, N.C. "I think that, quietly, they make fun of me, but at the same time, they'd like to do the same for themselves. " Brouse, who starred at Centennial, turned 50 this month.
