Coming into spring football practice, Navy's Noah Copeland and Travis Bridges were relatively unknown commodities. Copeland, a sophomore fullback, had played exclusively on special teams during his first season at the academy. Bridges, a junior noseguard, had spent his first two seasons in Annapolis trying unsuccessfully to make his way up the depth chart on an experienced and talented offensive line. After three weeks of practice and Saturday's spring game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Copeland and Bridges are among the bright spots for a team looking to reverse course after last season's disappointing 5-7 record, the first losing mark for the Midshipmen in nine years.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Last season's lasting college basketball image, one that helped make Florida's Joakim Noah the sport's most popular player, came a few minutes after the Final Four's final buzzer. Standing on the scorer's table, Noah, the NCAA tournament's Most Outstanding Player, turned to a throng of Florida fans at Indianapolis' RCA Dome and delivered a Gator chomp. Another image, one that helped make Noah the sport's most polarizing player, happened the same night. During the national title game against UCLA, Noah flirted with a few Bruins cheerleaders - winking at them once, blowing kisses another time.

INDIANAPOLIS-- --It's not as if UCLA isn't used to seeing bony, long-limbed, agile 7-footers from New York City dominate the national championship game. The Bruins had the original, Lew Alcindor, nearly 40 years ago. They could have used him last night. Not to put Florida sophomore Joakim Noah in a class with the man who later became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and who was in the stands at RCA Dome to see his alma mater try to restart the tradition he helped build. Noah got in UCLA's way, got all over UCLA, got into its head from the start, and got Florida one of the more unexpected, yet completely deserved, national titles in recent memory.

You don't so much read a book by Anne Tyler as you read through it. Her 18th novel, "Noah's Compass" hits bookstores today, and like its predecessors, it is masterful at exposing the mental evasions and compromises that underlie daily conversation. The author delves beneath the "what" "where" and "when" of even the most seemingly banal utterances to reveal half-articulated wishes and resentments, withdrawals and reconciliations. The main character in "Noah's Compass" is a retired schoolteacher named Liam Pennywell, who looks back at a life that has been under-lived.

I'll admit it. I'm an UNO-holic. My addiction to the classic Mattel card game must have been dormant for many years, but it was awakened last month when my wife and I went to Cape Cod for a two-week vacation with her family and our many young nieces and nephews. Seeking most-favored-aunt-and-uncle status, we stopped by a few toy stores before the trip in hopes of finding a hit with the under-9 set. The kite: good fun for about a half-hour on the beach. Twister? Unopened. But UNO? They couldn't get enough.

Caron Butler finished with 27 points, six assists and eight rebounds for Washington, and Antawn Jamison added 23 points and 12 rebounds, but the visiting Wizards fell to the Chicago Bulls, 117-110, last night. The Wizards dropped to 3-15 for the first time since the 1966-67 season, when they were the Baltimore Bullets. "It's tough. I've never been in this situation like this before," Butler said. "We're giving a lot of effort and we're giving a lot of energy, but we're still falling short."

INDIANAPOLIS -- There was no shortage of questions yesterday directed to players from both Florida and UCLA about the Bruins' storied basketball program and its championship tradition, but for Florida center Joakim Noah, there was a different kind of connection to the California school. Noah traced his family's athletic success back to UCLA grad and tennis legend Arthur Ashe. When Noah's father, Yannick Noah, was a 12-year-old tennis prodigy in Africa, Ashe discovered him during an African tour in 1971.
