The first time Adam Wallis wanted a Wii, he sat outside for 12 hours on a bitterly cold Sunday in November while he waited for a Target in Glen Burnie to open its doors. The finger- and feet-numbing experience was worth it. The 23-year-old Abingdon resident and his two brothers each snagged a Wii, which had just been released, at $250 apiece - only to turn around and sell the extremely coveted Nintendo video-game machine on eBay for a tidy $600 profit. Little did he know that eight months later, he and his wife, Stephanie, would be itching to own their own Wii and finding it difficult to get their hands on the hot, hot, hot console.

I'm not much around the kitchen. Neither is my 12-year-old son, Austin, who'd be content with ham and cheese three times a day. But the other night, we whipped up an amazing spaghetti in squid sauce, a zesty shrimp paella and, for dessert, cream puffs from scratch. And we didn't dirty a pan. We "cooked" on a video game called Cooking Mama: Cook Off, recently released for the Nintendo Wii. Austin had checked it out from our local library - libraries aren't just for books anymore - although he admitted he did so because it was the only game left.

Pokemons may look like cute, cuddly little monsters, but they can whup even Godzilla when it comes to sales. Since storming the U.S. toy industry last fall, all things Pokemon (pronounced poke-ee-mahn), the latest toy craze from Japan, have been emptying the wallets of pre-adolescent boys and girls (and their parents) nationwide. Here's how big it is:* Nintendo has sold 1.7 million of the Pokemon hand-held Gameboy video games (more than $45 million worth), making it the company's biggest seller ever.

$49.99 for Nintendo Wii. Rated Teen. * 1/2 Aside from the party-centric Smash Bros. titles, fighting games have had a sketchy history on Nintendo systems since the Nintendo 64, and Castlevania: Judgment doesn't break that trend. Drawing together a roster of familiar characters from the decades-running Castlevania games, along with a few new faces, Judgment is a relatively simple one-on-one fighter - and not very good. Players can run around freely during matches, and in doing so often end up facing away from each other.

Nintendo Co.'s sales are speeding along faster than a getaway car, shrugging off economic woes as if they were bugs on the windshield. Its Wii video game console continues to be sold out in many stores. Sales of its DS hand-held console remain hot despite its being a four-year-old product, ancient by game-technology standards. Sales of the Wii Fit exercise game, launched in May, are on track to surpass those of one of 2008's best-selling titles, Grand Theft Auto IV, by the end of the year, according to projections by Wedbush Morgan Securities.

Jean Tyrrell wanted to find activities that would allow students in the autism program at Patterson Mill Middle/High School to be more physically active during the school day. After researching some ideas, Tyrrell said she purchased a Nintendo Wii video game console with a grant that she received. "The kids really like Wii," said Tyrrell, a physical-education teacher. "And I think it's great. It gives the children with autism an age-appropriate leisure activity to do." Since the game was purchased, the children have all learned to play it, said Carolyn Trovinger, who teaches the middle school autism program.

Claire Carton is pretty sure her husband owns "every video game known to man" and that they're all named the same thing: Guns of War. Not surprisingly, one of the few games Carton likes herself, her husband can't get into. "What's the point of the Sims game?" he's always asking. "To have the nicest house," she says, to which he concludes: "That's so stupid." Gender disparity, it's easy to see, is alive and well in the video game world, evident in every explosion, every bloodletting, every bosomy sidekick.

Facebreaker (Electronic Arts) For Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. Rated Teen. Retail $49.99. ** games EA Sports' new marketing campaign is predicated on the idea that "everyone plays": Novices and experts alike can share in the fun simply by adjusting the level of controls. Though it's not a traditional EA Sports title, the arcade boxing game Facebreaker certainly doesn't abide by the company's new mantra. If this is supposed to be for everyone, why is the easiest skill level still really hard?

A Rockville technology company took on Japanese gaming giant Nintendo yesterday, saying it filed patent-infringement complaints with two federal agencies asking that U.S. importation of the popular Wii video game system be halted. Hillcrest Labs, which licenses a technology to manufacturers that use it to make motion controls for digital media, said it filed a lawsuit in a Maryland U.S. District Court alleging that components of Nintendo's Wii game systems infringe upon four of its intellectual property patents.
