When my cat Atticus died, I was a wreck. We got a call from a neighbor who found his little tabby body in the street. He'd been hit by a car. My husband (at the time) scooped him up and brought him home to the garage and left the cat there, as he had to fly off on a business trip. Long story short: A day later, I had an Episcopal priest in my backyard, giving my cat a send-off as we buried him (probably illegally). It made me feel a little better, standing with my friends, giving Atticus, a great feline, his due. At some point, I stopped continuously crying and shaking.

"I don't want to piddle in anyone's corn flakes," as my grandma Opal Starner used to say, her prelude to the main event. Folks at Baltimore's transportation department, put your hands over the bowls. I took a ride late last week to see your Nicodemus Bridge makeover. Nice idea, fine execution. But here comes the piddle: you ruined a half-century-old fishing spot for no good reason. The bridge over Liberty Reservoir at the Baltimore County-Carroll County line has been a great fishing spot since Howdy Doody was a 2-by-4.

You can't find it on road maps, but in the far northwest corner of the state of Kansas lies the town of Nicodemus, population less than 75. It has been there longer than 100 years.Baltimore filmmaker John Bright Mann found the town, and became fascinated by its history, when he was teaching in the late 1980s at the University of Kansas. Now Maryland Public Television has found the story of Nicodemus an apt follow-up to a documentary about Abraham Lincoln's views on race. Thus "Nicodemus" can be seen on MPT (channels 22 and 67)

Fishing poles have hung from the sides of Nicodemus Bridge since Howdy Doody was a 2-by-4. The span across Liberty Reservoir is where countless parents learned to catch pan fish from their parents and then passed along that knowledge to their own youngsters. You didn't need a boat, didn't need a fancy rod and reel, didn't need all day. Someone even hung lights from the bridge to allow night fishing. No one ever said it was legal, but no one ever said it wasn't."They've been letting folks fish off the bridge for 35, 40, 50 years," said Doug Gies, owner of Old Reisterstown Bait and Tackle.

Let's welcome back an old fishing buddy. The Nicodemus Bridge, for decades one of the best places to wet a line in north Baltimore County, is open for business again. The span across Liberty Reservoir was taken out of circulation earlier this year by the city of Baltimore, which controls the water and surrounding land. There's plenty of "atta boys" to go around on this one. First, to Lefty Kreh, who called me one spring morning and, in that quiet way of his, laid out the problem. "You should do something," he concluded.

A new bridge carrying Nicodemus Road over Liberty Reservoir between Baltimore and Carroll counties will open to traffic after almost two years of construction, the Baltimore Department of Transportation announced Wednesday. The department, which maintains the bridge because it falls within the city-owned reservoir system, said the concrete replacement bridge is scheduled to open to vehicles and pedestrians at 3 p.m. Friday. The new two-lane bridge is 552 feet long. The city began the $8.2 million replacement project in October 2009 with the demolition of the old bridge, built in 1952.
