LYLE ALZADO used to be a rough, tough -- emphasis on tough, by his own admission and boast -- defensive end with the NFL Raiders. Today, having "used a certain steroid" in trying for a comeback with the Raiders last year, he has an inoperable brain tumor. That sounds a loud alarm bell.Alzado's belief that the steroid brought on the tumor has some medical backing. Dr. Forest Tennant, the NFL's former drug adviser, told the Associated Press: "Anabolic steroids depress the immune system and lymphocytes.

Stop me if you've heard this one: It appears that the Orioles have a new television deal. The long-awaited, much-debated, leaving-us-jaded contract apparently is for three years. As previously indicated, games will be split among Home Team Sports and channels 13 and 54.There has been no announcement of the deal, but people in and around broadcasting are saying that a TV schedule is out, being shown to potential advertisers. According to the schedule, Channel 13 carries 32 games, Channel 54 gets 40 and HTS telecasts 78. Under the terms of the major leagues' new national TV contract, that total of 150 is the maximum allowed local broadcasters.

An open letter to Comcast chairman Brian Roberts: Dear Mr. Roberts, Congratulations on buying Home Team Sports the other day. In case you didn't already know it, you picked up a pretty decent television property, and in this day and age, when people like sludge peddler, er, wrestling chief Vince McMahon, are pushing into the mainstream, there's something to be said for respectable. The thing is, not so long ago, HTS used to be more than pretty decent. It was something special, the envy of regional sports channels nationwide (and that includes those puffed-up New York stations like Madison Square Garden and Fox Sports New York)

Had it not been for the opportunity to play in the 1959 NFL championship game for the Baltimore Colts, the future of Jerry Richardson, rookie wide receiver wearing jersey No. 87, would be impossible to foretell.Richardson took the $4,674.44 that went to players on the winning Colts team and, as the first matter of personal business, paid off his taxes. Then he bought stock in "Overnight Transportation" and cashed in to the extent of $2,800 two years later -- which he invested in a hamburger business called Spartan Foods.
