A cabal of corrupt corrections officers and members of the Black Guerrilla Family gang enjoyed nearly free rein inside the Baltimore City Detention Center, federal authorities allege, smuggling drugs and cellphones into the jail and having sexual relationships that left four guards pregnant. An indictment unsealed Tuesday names 25 people - including 13 women working as corrections officers - who face racketeering and drug charges. Twenty of the accused also face money-laundering charges.

Probing questions at presidential news conferences sometimes have a way of getting their principals to reflect on their state of mind -- and at the same time the state their presidency, particularly when things aren't going well. Back in 1995, when Bill Clinton was struggling against the onslaught of then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich and his conservative "Contract With America," a reporter suggested the president had diminished influence. He noted that two major television networks had declined to cover live the news conference and asked: "Do you worry about making sure your voice is being heard in the coming months?"

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson talked about several other issues at Monday's news conference: • He said he did not plan to honor Franklin's coach-in-waiting contract. "I wanted to have a national search," he said. "James would have have been a candidate. I told him I would not automatically give him the job. " While Anderson hedged on the "business decision" comment by explaining that the primary business of the department was developing student athletes, finances -- or lack thereof -- clearly played a heavy role in the decision.

On Saturday evening, Ravens coach John Harbaugh was asked about fourth-round draft pick John Simon, who was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. Harbaugh raved about Simon's attitude and work ethic. “I think Urban Meyer has a thing on YouTube -- have you seen it? -- where he talks about John Simon,” Harbaugh said, referencing Meyer's news conference after his Ohio State team narrowly defeated California, 35-28, this past September. “It's worth pulling up and taking a look at it. It probably says it all.” That afternoon, Simon, who was a defensive end for the Buckeyes but will play outside linebacker for the Ravens, was barely able to play because of a shoulder injury.

The Orioles made Adam Jones' six-year, $85.5 million deal official Sunday with a morning news conference. We've been reporting details for a while now, but I thought I'd bring you some quotes. The best one came from club executive vice president Dan Duquette when asked whether the team's and Jones' hot start spurred the decision to sign Jones long-term. “The dude rang the cash register every time he hit a home run,” Duquette said. “So I mean Adam kind of forced the issue, didn't he?

A transcript of Buck Showalter's news conference Tuesday afternoon at the winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn (provided by ASAP Sports):   Q. Buck, is it any more special having the winter meetings here in Nashville?  Obviously, a place you spent a lot of time. BUCK SHOWALTER:  I spent a lot of time.  Most people don't stay in AA that long. I didn't mean it that way.  Someone said, you're the all time career hits in Nashville.  Yeah, I was here for 20 years playing in AA. No, it's a great city.  Met my wife here.  That's probably the greatest thing.  Spent some off¿seasons here working to make ends meet.  A lot of memories.  A lot of memories.

The Rev. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, pastor of a Baltimore mega-church, stood on stage with Trayvon Martin's family, attorneys and Al Sharpton on Tuesday evening in a nationally televised news conference after a Florida special prosecutor announced that George Zimmerman would be charged with second-degree murder in the teen's death. "This is not a night of victory — this is a night of transition," he said. "Years from this moment, historians will have to write a new chapter. This is not a moment, but the beginning of a movement.

Though you probably already know that Beyonce will headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the best thing about that is the midweek news conference, during which the sportswriters get to rub elbows with some of the biggest names in entertainment. That's kind of a mixed blessing when the NFL trots out a super group from the 1960s. I'm pretty sure the headquarters hotel for the Rolling Stones a few years ago was the Museum of Natural History. The best news conference ever was put on by Prince, who didn't take any questions.

Clarksville resident Tatyana McFadden won the women's wheelchair race in the London Marathon on Sunday, six days after her win in the Boston Marathon. "The race is definitely dedicated to Boston and we had huge support from London, which was amazing," McFadden said during the post-race news conference. "Just the support that we're getting around the world means a lot, especially back in Boston and to the athletes. " McFadden, whose 1:46.02 time was a record mark for London, won the Boston Marathon wheelchair event Monday.

It had been a whirlwind day for G.G. Smith, the new men's basketball coach at Loyola, when a phone call interrupted his introductory news conference Friday afternoon. That morning, the Loyola assistant had a final interview with the school's search committee. Around lunchtime, he was summoned to the home of Loyola president, Rev. Brian F. Linnane, who informed Smith that the job was his. The 36-year-old then made emotional phone calls to his wife and mother. But during his news conference at Reitz Arena, he was still waiting for his father to return his call.

Contract negotiations between the Ravens and quarterback Joe Flacco have yet to resume, but the elite asking price the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player hopes to command is becoming clear. Now that Flacco has led the Ravens to a victory over the San Francisco 49ers with three touchdown passes in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, his agent is hoping to make him the highest-paid quarterback in the game. That would entail a multi-year contract exceeding New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees' annual average of $20 million and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning's annual average of $18 million.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti doesn't go half-stepping when he puts on a party. The Ravens' postgame celebration for friends and family featured a live performance by Mary J. Blige, who invited Ray Lewis up to the stage to teach her his famous “squirrel dance.” The bash continued well into the early morning and Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco said at today's MVP news conference that he got maybe an hour of sleep. He and coach John Harbaugh looked pretty sharp under the circumstances, as they took another round of questions about Sunday night's game.

Even though one brother is going to lose at the expense of the other, John Harbaugh said the result will generate the same emotion. "It's not really about how we're going to feel,” John Harbaugh said. “Every coach, every player, everybody in the organization, when you win, it's jubilation.

The Orioles officially introduced Vladimir Guerrero as their new designated hitter Friday afternoon in what should have been a very upbeat spring training news conference. The arrival of Guerrero solidifies an already upgraded Orioles batting order and adds some much-needed star power to a team that is trying to win back its disheartened fan following, so Andy MacPhail was all smiles when he pushed the one-year, $8 million contract in front of Guerrero, and Buck Showalter was equally happy to banter with his new superstar about where he might bat in the lineup.

School gets an F John Cherwa Los Angeles Times Perhaps the saddest part of the Manti Te'o Internet fraud story is the total lack of leadership shown by the once hallowed institution of Notre Dame. While a forensic examination of Te'o's statements would likely make it clear he was not telling nothing but the whole truth, the fact that the school allowed - and even encouraged - Te'o to not come clean on the hoax and focus on the BCS title game is appalling. Don't be persuaded by the near-teary news conference of AD Jack Swarbrick.
