Members of the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants are answering readers' tax questions through Thursday. My nephew lives with me. He is a college student. He is 26 years old. He worked and made less than $6,000. Can I claim him as a dependent since I provided his shelter, food and so on? His tuition was paid by his father, who does not live at my place of residence.No. Because your nephew is over the age of 24, he must have less than $2,700 of gross income to be claimed as a dependent.

I SHOULD HAVE seen it coming," she said. And from a long way off.She filled out every college application herself, pushing it under his nose for a signature. She signed him up for the SAT prep classes. I purchased for him the SAT computer software. But I don't think his fingers ever touched the keyboard. While the rest of his high school class was visiting college campuses, my nephew Rudi was slinging weights in the garage or leaving on a long jog, wearing fatigues, army boots and carrying a 60-pound backpack.

Q. I know a 4]-year-old child who sleeps with his favorite toy every night. When he's without his toy, he's irritable and cries. Is it fair to take this toy away from him as punishment? Also, is there an age when he must give it up?A. My answer to both questions is no. He needs this toy as a "lovey" and a backup when he has had to be disciplined. Discipline is about teaching, not punishment. When he's ready, he'll give it up.Q. My 13-year-old nephew has a terrible blinking of the eyes. It appears to be more noticeable when he's stressed or anxious.
