The painful Orioles tenure of first baseman Glenn Davis finally ended yesterday, when the club waived him for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.Davis, 32, who came to the Orioles in a blockbuster trade that cost the team three highly regarded young players in 1991, left without displaying the talent that had made him one of the most dominating hitters in the National League. He left so the Orioles could make a place on the roster for veteran outfielder Lonnie Smith, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday for two minor-league players to be named.

Because they were unaware of the potential seriousness of PTC the injury to Glenn Davis, the Orioles say they haven't even thought about the possible long-range ramifications.General manager Roland Hemond and manager Frank Robinson insist there was no attempt to cover up the neck injury that put Davis on the 15-day disabled list and could possibly sideline him for the rest of the season. When Davis was kept out of the starting lineup twice last week in Chicago, the official explanation was that he had a slightly strained hamstring muscle.

Landry's propensity for throwing his 6-foot, 210-pound body at running backs and receivers during training camp seems to have answered questions about the neck injury that sidelined him for most of last season. Question: : Has it been difficult to put the memory of that game against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 in the past? Answer: : It's been real easy for me to put that behind me. I've been cleared to play, I've been having fun out here, so that's the past. Q: : Is there anything that will give you pause?

There are all sorts of reasons the game the Ravens' secondary played last week against the Philadelphia Eagles will go down as one of the wondrous achievements of this surprising season. No reason, however, looms larger than the fact that it was pulled off by a defensive backfield in which exactly one player has started every game. It helped that the one player was Ed Reed - then again, he was the one whose season was most in doubt as opening day approached because of a serious nerve problem in his neck.

After missing the past six games with a neck injury that required surgery, Rolle will be in the lineup when the Ravens travel to Houston to take on the Texans. Rolle can't wait to return. "It's been tough watching, especially with Chris going down," Rolle said, referring to cornerback Chris McAlister.

Rather than stretch, the Ravens may choose to bend. Team officials usually shun swapping picks with another team in the first round, but they certainly would have to bend that rule and trade down in order to keep from stretching on a receiver not worth the 10th overall pick of this weekend's NFL draft. Though nearly all mock drafts and draft experts have only two receivers regarded as top 20 picks (and both almost certainly will be gone by the time the Ravens select), general manager Ozzie Newsome would not talk about what stretching for a player meant.
