Alix Membreno had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Audrey Bauer had 13 points to lead Navy to a 60-48 win over Bucknell in the Patriot League women's basketball tournament semifinals Monday night. The second-seeded Mids (20-11, 11-3 Patriot League) got off to a hot start, doubling up Bucknell (15-16, 5-9) at halftime 26-13. But Bucknell staged a comeback midway through the second half. The Bison pulled to within 39-35 with just under 10 minutes to play on a three-point play by Shelby Romine and back-to-back 3-pointers from Audry Dotson and Tyler Craig.

The Navy women's team, led by Jade Geif with 20 points, survived a Patriot League basketball quarterfinal by beating visiting Lafayette, 59-55 in overtime Thursday night. Both halves ended in ties, 29-all and 58-all. Geif made two free throws with 32 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Lafayette's Maddie Peabody missed a jumper from the left corner with 3.2 seconds left. In the overtime, Alix Membreno scored four of her team's 11 points and the Mids (19-11) held the Leopards (11-19)

Maryland basketball Jessie Hicks named one of 13 ACC Legends Former Maryland player Jessie Hicks has been selected as the Terps ' Atlantic Coast Conference Legend honoree. She will be recognized at the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C., March 7-10. Hicks ranks in the top 10 in scoring in Maryland history with 1,601 points, averaging 14.3 points per game. She still stands among the top five in blocks with 137 and is third all-time in field-goal percentage (.588).

Duke men's lacrosse head coach John Danowski announced Thursday that redshirt senior defenseman Casey Carroll will miss the 2013 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The procedure was performed Monday by Dr. Claude T. Moorman III , Duke's director of sports medicine. Carroll returned to the Blue Devils for a fifth year of eligibility after serving five years as an Army Ranger. He previously played for Duke from 2004-07, earning first team All-America honors his senior season.

The Navy men's basketball team went on a 12-0 run in the first half and led basically from start to finish in topping Army, 59-50, on Sunday at Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y. The win ended losing streaks of 16 games in the Patriot League and six overall for the Midshipmen, who improved their record to 7-12 overall and 1-2 in conference. Army, which entered the game 6-1 at home, fell to 8-10 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Navy win prevented the Black Knights from winning three straight games in the series for the first time since the mid-late 1970s.

Darion Atkins scored a career-high 17 points as one of four players in double figures to lead Virginia over visiting Morgan State, 75-57, on Wednesday night. Dewayne Jackson had a season-high 32 points - one shy of his career high - on 11-for-16 shooting to lead the Bears (3-5), who have lost two straight after a two-game winning streak. Akil Mitchell added 15 points to go with 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers (9-2), who won their eighth straight game. Virginia overcame an early challenge from a pesky Morgan State squad that kept fighting well into the second half, continuing an impressive run in which their average margin of victory has been more than 20 points.

Navy women's lacrosse coach Cindy Timchal has announced the team's schedule for the 2013 season, which includes a home game against two-time defending national champion Northwestern. Navy will play six Patriot League contests and 17 games overall. The Midshipmen, who have won three straight Patriot League titles and advanced to three consecutive NCAA tournaments, will open the season  Feb. 10 against Winthrop. The Navy-Winthrop contest will be one of 11 home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

College soccer UVa. blanks Terps, 4-0, for ACC women's title The No. 9 Maryland women's soccer team's run toward the program's first Atlantic Coast Conference championship ended with a 4-0 loss to No. 7 Virginia in the conference title game Sunday in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers (16-4-1) set the pace early and broke through in the 22nd minute when Gloria Douglas scored from the left side of the 18 past diving Terps redshirt freshman keeper Rachelle Beanlands . Virginia took a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute when Morgan Brian took a cross from Danielle Colaprico and took a shot from inside the 18. That initial attempt was turned away by freshman defender Erika Nelson , but the rebound bounced right back to Brian, and she sent the ball into the right side of the net for the goal.

Laurel Park Lighthouse Bay wins Smart Halo by nose Lighthouse Bay sat off the dueling leaders and then edged a 64-1 shot by a nose to win the $100,000 Smart Halo Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Laurel Park on Saturday. Jockey Kendrick Carmouche was content to sit behind front-runners Baby J and Jax and Jill before gaining the lead in the upper stretch. By midstretch Laurel Park-based Ek Haseena challenged Lighthouse Bay and the two bumped and brushed several times in the final furlong before the winner put a nose in front at the wire.

Et cetera Navy women lock up share of Patriot soccer crown The Navy women's soccer team clinched at least a share of the Patriot League regular-season championship with a 2-1 win at Holy Cross (6-10-1, 2-4 Patriot League) on Sunday. Navy will host Bucknell in the season finale Saturday; a win or tie by the Midshipmen, — or a Colgate loss or tie at American that day — would give Navy the No. 1 seed and make it the host for the league's postseason tournament Nov. 2-4. Junior forward Ashlynn Soellner finished with with a goal and an assist Sunday, and junior forward Paloma Perez also scored as Navy (17-1-1, 5-0-1)
